Sports betting players just watched one of the best Masters tournaments in recent memory, but the PGA Tour will pick up and head to Hilton Head Island on Thursday for the Verizon Heritage Classic, which was won by Brain Gay last year. Here’s a look at five to watch this weekend.
Golf Betting – Thursday, April 15
Jim Furyk (+1000): Furyk surprisingly missed the cut at Augusta National, but he’s solid at Hilton Head despite never winning here. Furyk is sixth all-time in career earnings in this event, and he finished fourth here in 2008. With his ball-striking ability, look for the grinder to be in the hunt.
K.J. Choi (+1500): Choi didn’t fold under the extra pressure of playing with Tiger Woods in all four rounds of the Masters, and in fact, he flourished, tying Woods for fourth. Choi has been extremely solid this year, and he’s playing with a chip on his shoulder after everyone counted him out following a 2009 season that was filled with injuries. Make no mistake: Choi is back, and if his putter is as good as it was at Augusta, he could win this running away.
Brian Gay (+2500): Speaking of running away, most sportsbooks didn’t see Gay rolling to a 10-stroke win in this event last year. Gay is a solid ball-striker, and he’s ninth on the PGA Tour in putting. He’s missed his last two cuts, but Gay leads the Tour in driving accuracy, and even though he’s not that long, it doesn’t matter because Hilton Head isn’t a long course.
Jerry Kelly (+4500): Kelly has a pair of top-15s in his last three starts, and he finished eighth here in 2007. He had to withdrawal last year after cracking a rib, and his game is coming around nicely. He’s another guy, that, if the putter is going, watch out.
Bo Van Pelt (+5000): The darkhorse of the group, Van Pelt has two top-15s in the last three years at Hilton Head, and he’s leading the Tour in ball striking. The flatstick has been a problem for him this year, though, as Van Pelt is 154th on the Tour in putting. He’s fine until he gets to the green, and if he can turn that around, he’ll start being more consistent.
Pick: Choi isn’t a solid lock like Cleveland is in NBA playoff betting, but after his performance at Augusta, you have to consider him for the win. Choi is solid from tee to green, and his putting was lights out at Augusta. Gay routed the field last year, and this year, Choi will do the same as he wins for the first time since 2008. Take K.J. Choi before making some NBA championship betting picks.
