In my opinion, the “mashed potatoes!” chant that made its debut during the Chevron World Challenge last year is one of the best things golf fans have ever come up with. I love watching golf, but I can only take so much golf clapping. That’s why when this guy yelled “mashed potatoes!” after Tiger Woods stroked a tee shot I laughed off-and-on for about three days. Either the same rowdy fan was back at this year’s World Challenge, or there was an impersonator in attendance. Whatever the case, some guy yelled “mashed potatoes!” after Graeme McDowell hit an approach shot over the weekend and it didn’t look like McDowell was impressed. As Devil Ball Golf pointed out, it appears Graeme made an inappropriate gesture after the shot and called the guy a “wanker.” For what it’s worth, McDowell went on to win the World Challenge — just like Tiger did after he was the recipient of the “mashed potatoes!” a year ago.  Can you say good luck charm?

Graeme McDowell Calls Fan a Wanker After He Yells Mashed Potatoes (Video)

Yelling "mashed potatoes!" after a golfer hits a shot is basically a known tradition at this point.  Graeme McDowell didn't get the memo I guess.  Graeme won the World Challenge at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif., on Sunday, and gave us a great laugh on the 16th hole when a fan yelled mashed potatoes at him.  Graeme didn't like it and looked at...

Woods 'very excited' about next year

Tiger Woods put the finishing touches on a season he's calling a success with a tie for fourth at his World Challenge at Sherwood Country Club. It wasn't his best work. Apart from a majestic 3 wood on the par-5 16th from 252 yards that set up a too little, too late eagle, the only magic he could summon on a soggy Sunday afternoon came on the greens. But because of indifferent...

McDowell frustrated with loud fans

Keegan Bradley's comments about a fan at Tiger Woods' World Challenge who called him a cheater last week for using a belly putter gave Graeme McDowell a platform to speak out against another kind of noise from the gallery that has gone on too long. ''You da man!'' has given way to ''Get in the hole!'' to ''Mashed potatoes.''...

Thompson prepares to defend Dubai Ladies title

Last year, it was a chat with the stars from the ''Twilight'' franchise. This year, it's a meeting with Tiger Woods and a role in his popular golf video game. Life keeps getting more surreal for American teenager Lexi Thompson, who is in the United Arab Emirates to defend her title at the Dubai Ladies Masters, which begins Wednesday. She won the tournament in...

Progress for Tiger, but still a long way to go

(Eds: With AP Photos.) By DOUG FERGUSON AP Golf Writer Ian Poulter finished his final round at the World Challenge and was chatting next to the clubhouse at Sherwood when he stopped in the middle of a sentence and changed his tone to one of grave concern. ''What is Tiger doing in a buggy?'' he said. His eyes were fixed on a large video board down the hill and across...
