Eight months ago I’d never heard of Demian Maia. Now the guy is running roughshod over the UFC’s middleweight division and is probably the number one contender to Anderson Silva’s title. You might ask; who the hell is this guy? And I might answer; three-time BJJ World Cup champion, two-time BJJ World Champion, and a BJJ Pan American champion in 2006. He then threw his hat into the cage in October 2007 and is now 4-0 with all wins coming via submission.
Maia said immediately following his win at UFC 91 that he would like to fight Mike Bisping. That would be a pretty good fight, one that I think Bisping loses though. Really, I don’t think Maia has to fight Bisping before he gets a title shot, and Bisping should fight some of Mia’s road kill before anything else. Take a look at both fighter last three opponents. Maia: Nate Quarry, Jason MacDonald, Ed Herman. Bisping: Chris Leben, Jason Day, Charles McCarthy.
A Silva/Maia main event isn’t as flashy as the rumored Silva/Liddell fight, but Maia can actually beat Silva. Although Silva has really good Jiu-Jitsu, he’s not a World Champion. If Maia can avoid getting kicked in the face, and take Silva down we might have something. That something might be Silva pulling off another brilliant win, but it would at least be interesting.
