Overall, Tiger Woods had a pedestrian round of 70 during the first round of play of the Honda Classic on Thursday at PGA National Golf Club’s Champion Course. While a 70 was good for an even par round and only five off the pace of co-leaders Graham DeLaet and Branden Grace (who?) heading into Friday’s action, meaning Tiger is well within striking distance, that does not mean his opening round didn’t involve what could be deemed a bit of adventure golf. After his tee shot on the Hole No. 6 found the water, Woods elected to play the ball from where it lied instead of taking a drop. So there was Tiger, taking off his shoes and socks, rolling up his pants and strapping on a pair of waterproof trousers so he could make his foray into the drink to attempt to free his ball from its watery lie without penalty. And of course, he pulled it off, saving par. Because he’s Tiger Woods. Said Tiger about his unconventional decision, via Golf Channel: “I was 1 over at the time, and if that ball is not playable from where it’s at, where I caught was pretty far back and I would have had to have dropped,” he said after his round. “I couldn’t even get an angle in the first cut and had to drop in the primary and had to lay up and didn’t get that up‑and‑down – looking at a six, 3 over, (but) all of a sudden I flip it, make par there and birdie the next.” Smack it up, flip it, par it down. This just in: Tiger Woods is good at golf.
