There is an old saying where I live: In 49 states, it’s just basketball. But this is Indiana. During the high school boys basketball tournament, the term “Hoosier Hysteria” fully lives up to the hype of Indiana being the king of the hoops world. On Friday night, in the semi-final round of the Lafayette Jefferson sectional tournament in Class 4A (Indiana folks will understand that description well, others may find the classification a bit tricky), another miraculous basketball moment bounced its way into the rich history and tradition that is Indiana high school basketball. The game featured the McCutcheon Mavericks and the Logansport Berries (yes, that REALLY is their school’s nickname). With time expiring and the game tied 53-53, an appearance in the sectional championship game was on the line when McCutcheon sophomore Tre’Shon Heard scored his only three points of the game … in incredible fashion.   It’s moments like these that make Hoosier-land the greatest state for high school basketball. Not only did the ball hit nothing but nylon net when it went through the hoop, students of McCutcheon High School stormed the court without missing a beat. Indiana basketball at its finest. What makes this game even crazier? McCutcheon held a 16-point advantage late in the 3rd quarter before the Berries stormed back, tying the game and having a chance to win it in the closing seconds. But a missed jumper by a Logansport player and a quick rebound by the Mavericks led to this unfathomable finish. With the 56-53 win, McCutcheon will play the Kokomo Wildkats, (yes, it is spelled with a “K”) for the sectional championship.
