Curlin's Headed Back to the Dirt; Dutrow Has His Head up His Ass

2007 Horse of the Year Curlin is officially headed back to the dirt when he competes in at Saratoga at the end of the month, majority owner Jess Jackson announced today. Meanwhile, Rick Dutrow, the loud-mouthed trainer of 3-year-old Big Brown, is back to his old ways snapping off classless comments about the defending champ - all right on the heels of his colt having to be all-out in the stretch to catch a longshot that is still eligible for allowance conditions.

and curlin took it baby!!too bad hard spun isn't here to jazz it up a little..

Oh, tell me about it. Loved Hard Spun. I actually thought the BC Classic last year set up well for him until the rains came.

hard spun was my fav..he really kept them all honest last year!!

big brown is a good horse but with jockey changes bad times!you know they pay this dude for sittin on the job possen for holy pictures!if your going to do it do it right!

Big Brown's a great horse - I just worry about how healthy he is. He was all out to catch a longshot in the Haskell and now they move him back to turf at Belmont? Tells me his hooves are acting up again. Just a hunch.
I know some will say Curlin was all out in the Woodward, but there's a big difference. He never looked in doubt and he had to run for about 5-6 furlongs going full sprint to close the distance. That's asking quite a bit - plus he came out of the race in magnificent shape.
I guess we'll see what Jackson thinks of the Santa Anita track early in the upcoming meet and from there he'll decide if Curlin goes to the Jockey Club Gold Cup (dirt) or the Goodwin (synthetic). That'll determine if his next major race will be the Classic or the Japan Cup.

i too worry about b.b..he is a nice horse but since he is off the droids he really has not been the same.
curlin did fine.yes he won..does he need to win by many lenghts??no it is a waste of his motor and legs.he was also jostled and really wide around the turn. can not wait to see him run again.

Totally agree with you. Man, how is it I'm just meeting you, wolfgirl? We should've been talking horses for the last year! :)

Two other horses I absolutely adore - Zenyatta (my sleeper "horse of the year" candidate) and Street Boss. Zenyatta I happeend to catch in her maiden debut at Holllywood Park and have been in love with ever since. Street Boss is my favorite spinter. Was sad to see Benny the Bull retire, though partly because I wanted to see Street Boss get him in the BC this October. Also have to give credit to my girl Ginger Punch. I was also thinking that if Heatseeker had stayed healthy he could've given Curlin and BIg Brown a run for the money in the Classic over the synthetic surface at Santa Anita.

Very nice meeting you here, by the way. Always love meeting new fans.

Kevin

hey kevin nice to meet you too. zenyetta is awesome nice to get a filly for hoty..sorry but i will be pulling for proud spell i know it is slim but she is gusty and never runs a bad race.i have been following the jones stable since i saw hard spun run.he has a lot of fillies that can run! proud spell a tiny horse with crooked legs and a big heart..love her..throw away the mother goose and she has had a great year.i will be pulling for her to get 3 yr.old filly of the year filly of the year.i loved 8 belles!!have you seen her other races??amazing!!so sad ..broke my heart. back to the biz at hand..we are getting a tropical storm here tomorrow so i guess racing on the east will be very crazy..i likes benny the bull too.do not like dutrow. kodiak cowboy can be a threat but i don't think larry will be going west. keep me updated and it was nice to find another fan of horses here.
rose

woops big brown races next week..too much work not enough play

So you live on the East Coast as well? I'm in Hanover, PA. :)

Proud Spell - I ALWAYS play Larry Jones filllies. He's the best trainer on the planet for fillies in my book. The Eight Belles thing broke my heart as well. Especially with all the horrible things folks said about Jones. He didn't deserve any of that. Dutrow on the other hand - that's a guy who deserves criticism.

I get the feeling I could talk horses all day long with you. I'm always over on the blog - although posting has been sparse lately. I'm working on a "task force" for the NTRA to try and come up with a plan to attract more fans to the sport, and it's been tough to do that, plus my day job, and the blog. That should be over in the next month though, and I'll be diving in full force to the Breeder's Cup and beyond. I'm also on facebook and myspace if you're on those apps. Just look for "Kevin Stafford" and when you see the picture of a guy in a blue shirt holding up a glass of wine - that's me. ;)

this is too funny as i live in new hope,pa..i agree with you completely.jones is what the old timers used to call''a hand'' a complete horseman! sweet hope ran a great 6 furloughs at delaware today another of his barnful of fillies! i will look for you and your blogs a kindred soul. i still have my ticket of 8belles from her derby bid and deep inside i feel like she was was the derby winner as she ran clean and brown did not.she was trying to pass him even after the finish..he was petering out and man she was coming..hope they all come back safe today..the girls are the best this year.zenyatta is having a monster of a year..do you blog at ntra?

hey kevin..i got to see proud spell run in the cotillion at philly park..she seemed a bit thin.they really gave her a hard time there but she did seem tired..i am glad i saw her as they are turning her out and who knows if she will race again..got some pix..too bad she didnt win..she always tries so hard

Curlin is at Santa Anita but not officially entered in the BC Classic until they see how he handles the synthetic surface. I hope he does, Real Brown.
