Today, the Oakland A's traded ace Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin to the Chicago Cubs for four minor leaguers. At first glance, I thought Oakland and Billy Beane got fleeced - c'mon, Billy, you couldn't land Felix Pie? No Josh Vitters? You couldn't hold out until the Rays were forced to overpay to keep the magic going? I mean, as an Angels fan, I think this is great...but still, what gives? But then reason set in - it might seem like Oakland got the short end of the stick, but Beane rarely disappoints. So I guess we need to wait and see how this one pans out. But this got us thinking - what were some of the worst MLB trades in recent years? We've given (most of) these ones time to pan out, and they were flat out awful..........
12 Comments:
  • Liriano got injured so that trade should not be #1. And Nolan Ryan is not the best pitcher ever. But a pretty good list.
  • I still put that as #1. While Liriano is injured this year, he put up a spectacular year last year, and at 24, he still has a full career in front of him. Unless he goes Mark Prior on us.

As far as Nolan - I said he's "arguably" the best pitcher ever because he has to be in the discussion, right?
  • Since June 1st Liriano is 6-0 with a 3.37 ERA and 45:9 K:BB ratio in triple A. I'd say it's pretty reasonable to assume he's well on his way back from that injury and ready to be a solid pitcher in the majors again. Probably will be called up soon after the all-star break.
  • Doyle Alexander for John Smoltz

    Larry Anderson for Jeff Bagwell

Carl Pavano and Tony Armas Jr. for an about to enter his ridiculous prime Pedro.
  • I think I just got the douche chills thinking about those ones.
  • The Zambrano-Kazmir trade might end up being one of the worst of all time. The best pitching prospect to come through the Mets system since the walking injury that was Paul Wilson and we gave him away. There was no logic to the trade whatsoever
  • Yeah, there is an argument for that being #1 right now the more I think about it. At least the Giants got one solid year out of Pierzynski. The Mets really got nothing out of that deal. Must suck for Mets fans to think you could have had Johan Santana-Pedro-Kazmir-Maine-Oliver Perez in your rotation, even if Pedro isn't Pedro anymore and Oliver Perez is a headcase.
  • David Cone has been involved in two terrible trades. First, the Mets acquire him and Chris Jelic for Ed Hearn, Mauro Gozzo and Rick Anderson. 8 years later, the Blue Jays traded Cone to the Yankees for Marty Janzen, Jason Jarvis and Mike Gordon.
  • All-Star second baseman Alfonso Soriano was traded by the Texas Rangers to the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night for Brad Wilkerson, Terrmel Sledge and a minor league pitcher.
  • Nice one - the Rangers didn't see a whole lot of returns there. That minor league pitcher was Armando Galarraga, who has actually had a pretty nice season so far (7-2, 3.27 ERA) - unfortunately for the Rangers, he's doing it for Detroit.

Just further evidence that the Rangers are pretty good at spotting young pitching talent (Galarraga, Chris Young, John Danks, Edinson Volquez), but they're even better at giving it away.
  • Dude, they basically dealt AROD (not in a contract year) for Wilkerson. Thank you Jon Daniels for starting to wake up.
  • All bad trades and it seems that the Rangers lead the charge in the horrible trade department. Liriano trade is one that only time will tell but i think that that and the Kazmir trade will go down as HORRIBLE trades. Also i think that even though i am an A's fan and in Billy We Trust this trade is weak for what they should have been able to get.

Harden at Home

"I don't think I could be going to any better situation than with the Chicago Cubs." - Rich Harden. That's the kind of thing you like to hear when players come in. Not like he's going to say "****, where am I going?" or "Do they know I'm allergic to ivy?". But, point being, I like to hear people come here with the intention of staying and having the reverence expected for a first...

In Beane We Trust

I drink the Billy Beane Kool Aid by the gallon so after seeing yesterday's Cubs-A's trade, I fully expect: a) Rich Harden to possibly not be available for the postseason this year, and almost certainly not make it to the end of next season without spending significant time on the DL. The current stretch he's in [...]

The NL Central Gets Cut Throat or Why I love Billy Beane

A quick, outsider's view on why this deal looks like it'll work in Billy Beane's favor. Therefore, why the Cubs are idiots. Seriously, they just must be cursed.

Beane strikes again

We continue our admiration of this deal, in spite of its common disdain. This time we look at NL Central rival, the Cubs, motivating factors for this trade and are left scratching our heads.

Ace Pitching Floods Upper Midwest

After seeing Doug Melvin 90 miles to the north acquire CC (sans punctuation) Sabathia, Big Jim Hendry pulled out his own move acquiring hard-throwing but injury prone Mark Prior Rich Harden.  To cover his ass for when if Harden gets injured, he coaxed Billy Beane to throw in Chad Gaudin, who can eat some innings [...]

West Coast Talent Exodus- Shifting Power in Sports World

Harden's and Sabathia's move to the NL is part of a larger trend of NL pitching emerging superior to AL pitching. In basketball Brand's move to the Eastern conference is part of a larger trend of the Eastern Conference closing the talent gap on the Western conference.

Zambrano dominant, Cubs improve to 2-0 in Rich Harden Era (RHE)

Tonight was one of Zambrano's better starts in some time.  He held a Reds team that loves to hit against Zambrano to just one hit in 8 innings of work (a home run by Dunn, his 7th off Zambrano in their careers).  He struck out 5 and walked none.  Zambrano improved to 10-3 with a 2.84 ERA.  Since his return from the DL, Zambrano has made 2 starts and has 2 wins.  He's thrown...

A Hard(en) Act to Follow

On the heels of the CC Sabathia trade to the Brewers, who are a division rival by the way, the Cubs made a deal of their own. A day after CC went from being an Indian to a Brewer, the A's oft injured stud Rich Harden, along with RP and spot starter Chad Gaudin were sent to the Cubs in exchange for middle of the rotation SP Sean Gallagher, OF Matt Murton, INF/OF Eric Patterson and...

Some thoughts on post-CC Game 1

First let's start with CC. Five was his big number tonight - 5 hits, 5 walks, 5 Ks and, according STO, 5 standing O's from the Milwaukee faithful. Despite the ten base runners over 6 innings, the big man gave up only two runs and as I write this it appears he will get his first NL win tonight. Let me just wish the Brewers fans good luck with CC. I've always like...

Cubs starters projections for the rest of the season

Using the ZIPs in-season projection tool, I calculated the projections for the 5 Cubs starters for the rest of the year.  Rich Harden's stats are projected as a Cub.  Since Jason Marquis remains in the rotation for the time being, I only calculated his projection and not Sean Marshall's.  Some pretty good numbers below.  Take a look at Harden's numbers.  Ridiculous. ...

Quick Hits

-The Braves will recall Jeff Francoeur tonight after he went 7-13 in Double-A.-The Cubs will step up their efforts to acquire a starting pitcher after the Brewers recent deal, including targets Rich Harden and Randy Wolf. -Curt Schilling is still undecided on whether he will play baseball again.

Phillies Still Shopping for a Starter

As discussed last week, the Phillies thought they had a shot at CC Sabathia and now that that isn't happening, they are looking elsewhere. With the Cubs grabbing Rich Harden almost on top of the Sabathia deal, that leaves the Phillies considering Mariners LH Erik Bedard and Toronto RH AJ Burnett.

Trade Burnett Now!

If JP Ricciardi has half a brain in his head, he's spent the last 48 hours of so with a phone pressed to each ear, working the phones to find a home for AJ Burnett. Yes, that is a BIG IF, but a guy can hope, can't he? The last two days have seen big name, big [...]
