Things just are not improving for Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Ricky Romero.

The left-hander, who at one time was 8-1 this season, lost his 12th consecutive decision Sunday when the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Blue Jays 9-4.

Romero had pitched well in his previous start, Aug. 28 at Yankee Stadium, going seven innings while taking a 2-1 loss. However, he did not retire a batter in the Rays' six-run second Sunday.

He was not helped by a ball lost in the sun that went for a hit and another hit that probably could have been caught. But when it was done, he was charged with seven runs on eight hits in one-plus innings.

"At this point, we don't have any plans on shutting him down," manager John Farrell said. "We've got Thursday off followed by next Monday. ... There's going to be some built-in rest.

"When we talk about his last outing in New York, it was on seven days' (rest). ... We'll get through this next week that includes those two off days. At that point, we'd probably look to add a sixth starter to continue to build in additional rest for everybody in the rotation."

Romero said, "I felt pretty good today. I left some fastballs up, and other things fell for them that inning, That's just the way the game is."

He said he was surprised at the way he pitched after he had done so well against the Yankees.

"Yeah, we had the same game plan as the one we had in New York," he said. "It just didn't work. You know, just getting ahead with fastballs and stuff like that. They came out aggressive. I was ahead of some guys but just wasn't able to put them away."

Romero has not won since June 22 at Miami. In 13 starts since then, he has 12 losses and a 7.98 ERA.
