Way too soon. Can they play with the same uniform 1st?

welll that might be true but on paper we r good

It must feel exciting to be a part of a team with a legitimate shot at winning the World Series. I guess every team has a shot on Opening Day, but of course for a select few it is a lot more realistic.

Have you spoken with any of your new teammates, Dontrelle?

yeah they welcome me with open arms. in the bigs everyone has a shot. its just some teams battle with health and some dont. but ive tallked to a lot of the guys

That's way on the ridiculous side. Why can't we let them do something on the field before mentioning them with one of the greatest teams of all time. I don't see anything close to a Ruth or a Gehrig in that lineup. If you want to compare stats, look at the fact that Ruth hit 60 HR and Gehrig hit 47. Third place was 18! Is there a player on the Tigers that is going to triple the field in HR? Let's let the Tigers be good and let them earn very good or great!

yeah i agree we have to go out there and do it

True. And there is no Ruth or Gehrig in the line-up, but I think the point of the article was that top to bottom, it is as good as the "27 Yankees. More homers, more RBI's and a higher overall batting average. Some of it is a little misleading due to the era we are in now. What it really draws attention to is just how good Ruth and Gehrig really were...

I have no qualms with Detroit doing it. I'd love to see some AL attention go somewhere outside of NY and Boston. I just think all the preseason hype is out of control and comparing a team that has done nothing yet to one of the greatest teams led by two of the top 10 players of all time is crazy Good luck D-train. Hopefully you'll pitch in between Verlander and Bonderman, that would be a nice mix in a 3 game series. If Detroit is serious about shipping you, come join the Dodgers! We can use a strong LHP in the rotation!

it's definitely too early to be comparing teams right now...you can project and predict how well you think a team will play -- but there are so many factors that play into a season that it's entirely too early to start putting them in the same class as the '27 yankees. the past few years, everyone was trying to put the '05, '06 yankees in that category, and you know what...you aren't compared to the '27 yankees anymore, when you don't win it all. let's let the tigers (and don't get me wrong, on paper, they're as good as anyone in baseball now) do their talking on the field and see what they do -- and then after the season's over, let the comparisons start flowing.

and, by the way, it's flown pretty well under the radar...but, as huge as the cabrera/willis deal is/was, i think the deal for renteria was great, and didn't get enough "pub".

This Team shouldn't even be mentioned in a sentence with the NY Yankees...Murders Row....The 2008 Detroit Tigers haven't done sht yet.....so Please quit comparing them to a proven frkn dynasty....rich in tradtion...Detroit had Al Kaline Bill Freehan and Denny (sentence me agian) McClain.....The Yankees had.....oh...I can't waste anymore time on this..I'm getting a headache wondering who the hll thinks up these articles.

Just stop comparing teams. Times have changed... the '27 Yankees were a great team and I am sure the '08 Tigers w\ill have an above average season, but were never going to see Babe Ruth step to the plate with Dontrelle pitching to him so really no one has any idea which team would be better.

i wonder if the pitching was the same back then . i mean u will never know cause they didnt have speed guns or things like that

i think the pitchers back then pitched with more of a "chip" on their shoulders and owned the inside part of the plate. then again, i think it was an all different game back then. plus, with all the "armor" hitters are wearing now adays, outside of getting hit in the face, there's not much else to be afraid of anymore.

i grew up around an old time ballplayer -- ned garver, he was good friends with my parents. i believe, he's still the only major league pitcher to win 20 or more games in a season, on a team that lost 100 or more. he pitched back in the early 50's to mid 60's for the st. louis browns, tigers, etc. he's got some great stories, and he always used to talk to me about how baseball's changed over the years...but one thing he was quick to point out...he thought that pitchers back then, threw just as hard as guys today, but that there are just more guys that throw harder now, rather than a select few.

baseball's definitely become a year-round thing, now, while back then almost all players worked in the off-season to make end's meet. i know one thing, i wish i could have seen koufax, gibson, and even satchel paige pitch in-person...but then again, kids someday will say the same thing about clemens, maddux, etc., someday too.

That's a good point... I mean Babe pitched along with being a fielder... could anyone see A-Rod or Ryan Howard taking the mound and pitching?

There are guys who could do both I think. D-train is an example, he can stroke! Look at the AZ kid who was a monster with the bat. Digging into my Dodger archives (painfully), Darren Dreifort was one of the best hitters in college and was a DH as well as the team's closer. Today's game is extremely specialized so nobody wants their player hurt doing something beyond the standard work for his position (see Jose Canseco). I remember watching Fernando pinch hit regularly. It could be done, today's money just doesn't give the managers/GMs the freedom to risk "their investment". It's too bad.

True about pitching back in those days being different but I think the mound used to be higher back then and actually gave the pitchers more of an advantage. So Ruth and Gehrig's #'s are really awesome and considering Ruth admitted to playing drunk a lot its insane he hit so well. Dontrelle, welcome to Detroit I can't wait to see you play. I was wondering, where did you come up with the high leg kick? It's awesome!

Dontrelle, Welcome to the Tigers. We fans look forward to having you as part of the team.

OH PLEASE....GIVE ME A BREAK. Tigers will be a great team, but not the 1927 Yankees. Why do people always want to place pressure on teams to be like other teams? Just go out there and give it everything you got! They might do better.
