The designated hitter only applies to the American League, sorry National League fans. Love the position or hate it, it exists, and warrants its own free agent category. I hate it. I grew up with Edgar Martinez, perhaps the best designated hitter in the history of the position (is it really a position?) and I hate it. I think that it deserves mention in almost every major problem facing baseball (steroids and PEDs, bean ball incidents, American League imbalance, etc.), that stated, there are quite a few good hitters that will be on the market that are bad fielders, guys who should be relegated to the bench for defensive innings. *Note: Players with options will be kept off the list unless their options are projected as unexercised. No arbitration-eligible players will be included unless they are projected as non-tender free agents. Ages represent age on June 30, 2010 1. Bobby Abreu, 36 years old Image by RSzepan via...

Bobby Abreu isn't saying it, but he'd like to make the Yanks pay

Thank you, Bobby Abreu(notes). While the New York media salivates over the potential of a Joe Torre vs. Yankees matchup in the World Series, you're serving up a hot revenge-tinged ALCS appetizer for the soap-starved masses.  Bon appetit!  OK, so you're not exactly making what people are specifically ordering, at least not with your words. Though you could be uber-bitter after the...

Abreu Rejects Angels' 2 Year/$16M Offer

Per Jon Heyman, Bobby Abreu has turned down the Angels' 2 year/$16M offer.

Abreu rejects 2-year, $16M extension

The Angels offered outfielder Bobby Abreu a two-year contract extension for about $16 million, SI.com has learned. However, Abreu did not accept the offer and is believed to be looking for more after helping to lead the Angels to the ALCS against the Yankees.

Discussion: The Angels And Bobby Abreu

Last offseason was hard on aging, positionless players. Just ask Jason Giambi, Luis Gonzalez or Richie Sexson. Even though he was coming off a solid season, Bobby Abreu signed a deal that guaranteed him just $5MM. He turned out to be a real bargain for the Angels, posting an .825 OPS and stealing 30 bases. Abreu drove in 100 runs for the seventh straight year, played...

Abreu Vs. Hall of Famers

Both Mike Silva and Rob Neyer raise interesting points about Bobby Abreu’s Hall of Fame candidacy. As Mike points out, Abreu consistently topped a 120 OPS+, and his career OPS+ is 132. Meanwhile, Neyer correctly asserts that Abreu never finished higher than 14th in MVP voting. Such a lack of regard usually means one thing: [...]

Revisiting Bobby Abreu and HOF- Again

One of the names that may be a key to the Yankees/Anaheim ALCS is none other than Bobby Abreu. He continues to quietly rack up productive seasons. Maligned in Philadelphia for his “passionless” play, Abreu’s career seemed to be headed downward when he was traded in July of 2006. Many, including me, thought he might [...]

Harper: Abreu brings most from coast to coast

If ever there was a player who personifies the East vs. West mentality, it is Bobby Abreu, who is being glorified as an Angel for the same traits that made him a scapegoat in Philadelphia and an afterthought in New York.

Each Moment Is a Tribute for Angels

by Lisa OlsonFiled under: MLBNEW YORK - This is how it ends, in the Angels' perfect little world. They steal their share of bases, acts of defiance that come so naturally, and the starting rotation hands the ball over to the bullpen, which doesn't fall apart. Mike Scioscia, the crafty former catcher who is fluent with quips and stingy when it comes to making managerial mistakes,...

Yankees' Teixeira, Angels' Abreu face former teams in ALCS

Mark Teixeira and Bobby Abreu have plenty in common. Smooth swings, sharp eyes, opposite-field power. And something else now, too. As the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels prepare to meet for the American League pennant, both sluggers can easily recall what life was like in the other dugout.

Odda & Ends: Webb, Abreu, Indians

Here are some afternoon tidbits: The Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro, in his latest piece, reiterates that Brandon Webb only wants to discuss his 2010 option. The Diamondbacks are hoping to add a 2011 option to the deal. Webb, however, hopes a healthy 2010 will increase his 2011 value. Dave Cameron at Fangraphs breaks down Bobby Abreu's value, and...
