Larry Bowa, Jim Thome, Randy Wolf, Vicente Padilla in the NLCS. That's what Phillies fans were thinking about and hoping for in 2003. Well, it finally happened, but as we know, it happened with the Dodgers, who now face the Phillies in a re-match of last years NLCS. Make no mistake about it, this a better, more experienced Dodger team than we faced last year, and this will not be a 5-game Phillies victory. The Phils will have to play well in every facet of the game to win, and that might not even be enough. As I said before the NLDS: Until the Phillies lose, I will not be changing the format of my previews. So, in the same format as last year's preview, here's my 2009 NLCS rundown. The Aces Cliff Lee / Cole Hamels vs. Randy Wolf / Clayton Kershaw Like in the Rockies series, the "name" pitchers are on the Phillies side, but that doesn't mean they are better. Let's take a quick look at how these pairs pitched in the first round. The Dodgers won the 2 games Wolf and Kershaw pitch...

WATN: Vicente Padilla, NLCS Game Two Starter

There will be quite a few familiar former Phillies putting on their Dodger Blues this evening in Los Angeles. Randy Wolf, the Dodgers game four starter, spent the bulk of his career in Philadelphia. It's crazy to think the Wolf Pack debuted over a decade ago at the Vet. Jim Thome, perhaps the key acquisition brought in to revitalize a struggling franchise just in time for their...

On the Theoretical Dawn of a Second Jim Thome Era

We’re a little late to the party here, but by now we’ve all heard the super-secret whispers about Jim Thome wanting to return to Chicago: “I’ll be honest, I would still love to come back,” Thome said, tightening the blue batting gloves on each hand. “I still care about the city. I mean, we’re going to [...]

Keeping Padilla in LA

Joe Torre’s decision to start Vicente Padilla in game two means he’ll also be on schedule to start game six, both in Dodger Stadium. Padilla does not have a good history in Citizen’s Bank Park, where he allowed 38.7 home runs per 200 innings while he was with the Phillies. In a very [...]

Discussion: Vicente Padilla

Vicente Padilla's stock has risen dramatically since he signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers in August.  He posted a 3.20 ERA in 39.3 innings, and was brilliant finishing off the Cardinals in Game 3 of the NLDS.  He received hugs from Joe Torre and Ned Colletti and kind words from his new teammates. Padilla will be a free agent this winter.  His checkered history...

Offsides: The Phillies Crash LA's Party

Joe Torre was trying to politely inform Randy Wolf that his spot in the rotation would be skipped so Clayton Kershaw would start Game One, but Charlie Manuel just had to bust up their meeting. (For more on the NLCS, check out previews by Ryan Fagan and Dan Levy.)

2009 NLCS Game 1: The Return to Hollywood

The Los Angeles Dodgers had the best record in the NL this season. They have on of the best hitters of our generation, aided artificially or not. They have a stacked bullpen. But do they scare you? Having followed this Phils team for the past few years, not a lot scares me anymore. I'm more scared of our bullpen blowing a game than I am of the Dodgers shutting the...

Clayton Kershaw will start Game 1 for the Dodgers

Torre gives him the nod over Randy Wolf.

Update: Dodgers first to tip hand, set NLCS rotation

Breaking news via Todd Zolecki (and just in time for a rewrite). After announcing Clayton Kershaw as his Game 1 starter, Joe Torre will follow with Vicente Padilla, Hiroki Kuroda and Randy Wolf. Meanwhile, the Phils have made Cole Hamels official for Game 1. Last series, Beerleaguer picked Cliff Lee as his key to the division series and it turned out to be a rather good guess for...

Clayton Kershaw gets Game 1 start

Left-hander will open NLCS against Philadelphia Phillies. Vicente Padilla will start Game 2, followed by Hiroki Kuroda in Game 3 and Randy Wolf in Game 4. Left-hander will open NLCS against Philadelphia Phillies. Vicente Padilla will start Game 2, followed by Hiroki Kuroda in Game 3 and...

The bench will be important for the Los Angeles Dodgers in this series

The bench came up big for the Dodgers in the first round of the playoffs with the Cardinals as Mark Loretta provided a game winning pinch hit. He is still #3 or #4 in line for the Dodgers as far as pinch hitters go. Jim Thome will be the first hitter off the [...]
