TEAMS: Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Houston Astros, New York Yankees
Coming out of the All Star break, The Boston Red Sox had the best record in the American League and only the Philadelphia Phillies had a better record in all of baseball. The offense led all of baseball in runs scored at that point and the pitching had allowed the sixth fewest runs in the AL. The team was clicking on all cylinders and just under two weeks after the break they would reach their high water mark, leading the New York Yankees in the AL East by 3 games on July 27.
Jacoby Ellsbury led the charge, hitting .382/.430/.700 during July, continuing MVP caliber season. Most significantly, he hit 8 home runs in the month, his highest one month total to that point. The power surge added the final piece to Ellsbury’s skill set, solidifying his place as one of the best all-around players in the game.
The Red Sox were not without issues at this point, however. The team had lost two starters for the season, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Clay Buchholz, . Their replacements, Andrew Miller...

#56: How many home runs will Ellsbury hit?
One of the most important questions entering 2012 fantasy drafts surrounds a speedy Najavo who’s set up camp in Boston’s outfield. If Jacoby Ellsbury can come close to matching his 2011 power output he’s a no-brainer first round draft pick. Heck, if he can hit 30 more homers while maintaining that .300-plus average and elite run and stolen base totals you’d have to take him...
Player Profile #192: Daniel Bard | SP, RP | BOS
So it looks like Bard is trying to become a starter, but do we have any idea of how he will do? The short answer is no, but we recently have seen players like Alexi Ogando and C.J. Wilson make the switch successfully. From a fantasy perspective, I was excited to see what Bard could do as a closer, but he has plenty of potential as a starter as well. He already has a nasty fastball...
2011: A Red Sox Year in Review: Agony and Ecstasy in the First Half
The Boston Red Sox came out of Spring Training looking like the team to beat in the American League. The questions surrounding Adrian Gonzalez’s surgically repaired shoulder seemed to have been answered with a strong training camp. Three players that struggled to stay on the field in 2011, Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis and Jacoby Ellsbury, all looked fully recovered and ready...
Kalish To Miss Start of Season
According to MLBTradeRumors.com, Ryan Kalish says he had left shoulder surgery in November in addition to his September neck operation, according to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe. Kalish may be ready for game action by May or June, but he doesn’t have a clear timetable. To read more click HERE.
Your Morning Dump...Where Quentin didn't fit the Red Sox mold
Every morning we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
According to a major league source, the Red Sox weren’t engaged in talks for outfielder Carlos Quentin, whom the White Sox traded to the Padres Saturday for pitching prospects Simon Castro...
AL East Notes: Nakajima, Guthrie, Frasor
On this date in 1996, the Red Sox signed veteran left-hander Jamie Moyer, who at that time had a 4.51 ERA in 1116 2/3 MLB innings over the course of nine MLB seasons. Though he appeared in just 23 games for Boston, he enjoyed a career renaissance in Seattle and hasn't stopped yet. Moyer, now 49, is recovering from Tommy John surgery and has drawn some interest from MLB teams...
2012: Futures Altered?
Here's the latest on my borderline-obsessive speculation about Futures at Fenway 2012:Red Sox schedule currently doesn't have any notation of the game(s) at all.Paw Sox schedule still shows them playing at Fenway against Buffalo on August 18th.Portland is already selling tickets to their home game that day, so they're out.Greenville is on the road that weekend.Salem has...
Tune In to 'Red Hot Stove Live' Tuesday at 6 p.m. to See Ben Cherington Live in Studio
The Red Sox made some noise last week by trading for All-Star closer Andrew Bailey. But there's still work to be done, as general manager Ben Cherington continues putting the pieces together for the 2012 season. Cherington will appear on Red Sox Hot Stove Live Tuesday at 6 p.m. on NESN to discuss the Sox' offseason and the team's preparations for the upcoming year. He...
Did Tim Thomas, Tom Brady, Jacoby Ellsbury or Kemba Walker Have the Best 2011?
Tom Brady has a realistic chance at surpassing 5,000 passing yards, and in any other year that would be a banner achievement. Not this year. Not here. Brady's assault on the record book is just one of a handful of epic performances from New England athletes in 2011. For the first time since Brady took his first snap with the Patriots in 2001, it's possible he is no longer...
