The Chicago White Sox picked up Brett Myers in a trade with the Houston Astros last week, but he will serve in the eighth inning role and not as the closer limiting his value in A.L. only leagues. Addison Reed owners should feel confident that their guy will see the majority of save chances the remainder of the season unless he implodes at some point. Myers is due to become a free agent after this season unless he ends up with 45 games finished this season. Currently he is at 29 and there is no way the White Sox will let him reach 45, otherwise his $10 million club option would become guaranteed.

The Milwaukee Brewers moved Francisco Rodriguez into the closer last week, in part due to the struggles of John Axford, but also in an effort to boost the trade value of K-Rod. Rodriguez threw four consecutive days at one point, collecting two saves with six strikeouts. His value as a closer will be short lived because any team that trades for him is going to put him in a set up role most likely. Axford was removed from the closer role after blowing his sixth save of the season, allowing three runs in 2/3 of an inning against the St. Louis Cardinals on July 16th. He should resume his role at closer if he can string together another couple of scoreless outings.

While it looked like Tom Wilhelmsen was only a short term solution at closer in Seattle earlier this season when Brandon League was struggling, he has held up well in the role, converting 10-of-12 saves for the year. He picked up three saves last week and has allowed just one run between June and July.

American League Saves last week:

Jim Johnson – 4
Tom Wilhelmsen – 3
Rafael Soriano – 2
Jose Valverde– 2

National League Saves last week:

Joel Hanrahan – 4
Aroldis Chapman – 4
Huston Street – 2
Kenley Jansen – 2
