James McDonald (credits below) Justin Verlander got rocked, a pitcher let up 5 earned runs on one hit, a different pitcher hit a game-winning homer, and the Orioles finally fell out of first place in July. I guess this is a good time to recommend the @CantPredictBall twitter feed. The aforementioned Justin Verlander had what was probably his worst start of the season, yet he only earned 3 runs in six and a third innings. Simply put, Verlander faced a good lineup and had some of that good luck in his BABIP turn to bad luck. He’s still an ace, and there is no reason to be the slightest bit worried about him. As a Red Sox fan, I attempted to watch Daniel Bard ‘pitch’ today, but instead I found myself watching him throw erratically, and had to turn it off half way through the first inning out of frustration and disgust. I’ve watched Bard many times, and I just don’t think he’ll succeed as a starter; he’s just not consistent enough. A positive in the bullpen is better than a negati...

DETROIT Justin Verlander wasn't about to blameMagglio Ordonez for his loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday.
After all, it was Ordonez's 2006 homer that took Verlander to the World Seriesand his 2007 catch that ended Verlander's first no-hitter.
The Tigers ace simply pointed out that the lengthy ceremony honoring Ordonezwas one of the things that didn't help his...
The AL is known less for its great pitching and more for its power. However, there have been some top flight arms to pass through the ranks these past few years. Here are the five best picks to win the Cy Young Award.
V: Detroit Tigers RHP Justin Verlander
The reigning top pitcher in all of baseball is a paltry 5-4. The results are more to his hyped lineup’s ineptitude than...
Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez each homered off Justin Verlander, and Phil Hughes pitched a four-hitter to lead the New York Yankees to a 5-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.
Jeter homered on the first pitch of the game, and Rodriguez hit a long solo shot in the third inning. Hughes (5-5) didn't need much support in throwing his first career complete game of nine innings...

Yankees at Tigers - Phil Hughes vs Justin Verlander......here we go! I am a huge Yanks fan so I have said before I shy away from betting against them, but this opportunity is too good. Verlander is 3-0 with a 2.28 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 27 2-3 innings over his last four starts versus the Bronx Bombers at home. Verlander on the year is pitching much...
DETROIT (AP) -- Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez each homered off Justin Verlander, and Phil Hughes pitched a four-hitter to lead the New York Yankees to a 5-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.
Jeter homered on the first pitch of the game, and Rodriguez hit a long solo shot in the third inning. Hughes (5-5) didn't need much support in throwing his first career complete...
Justin Verlander took advantage of the 7:05 Saturday start and a non-start day to stop by the Team Penske garage during the Detroit Grand Prix qualifying Saturday. Helio Castroneves tweeted his excitement and posted a picture of him talking with the reigning American League Cy Young/Most Valuable Player.
Castroneves won his third Indianapolis 500 last weekend. Contrary to early...
On Magglio Ordonez’s big retirement day, the Detroit Tigers should have penciled him in the lineup for his bat. The Tigers only managed four hits off the unflappable Phil Hughes while Justin Verlander struggled early and often. That created the … Continue reading →
By Richard L. Shook DETROIT -- Justin Verlander may have the hardware, but on Sunday, Phil Hughes had the stuff. Hughes bested the Detroit Tigers' Cy Young/MVP Award winner with his first complete game this year and second of his career while New York backed him with a two-home run attack in a 5-1 victory by the Yankees. His fastball was crisp, he moved it around and by...
Somebody get Bogert here a tree to chew on
I was all set to write this post about how bad the Tigers are with one gently grabbing at my nuts in a "suck these" fashion, but an outsider has intervened and asked for this space today. And who am I to deny the reigning Cy Young Award winner and apparent MVP of the American League? I mean, most MVPs that I know get owned...
DETROIT - Justin Verlander did not look like a Cy Young/MVP Award winner Sunday, and the New York Yankees didn't give him a chance to. Detroit's ace likes to ease into things these days, opening by spotting his 90-93 mph fastball and then ratcheting up the velocity as the game progresses. But Derek Jeter was ready for that and jumped on the first fastball he saw, which...
DETROIT -- Timing hasn't been a staple of the 2012 Tigers. Then again, neither has consistency.
After the incredible high Magglio Ordonez's retirement ceremony provided the sellout Comerica Park crowd (42,419 in attendance), Derek Jeter did his best to take the crowd out of the game.
About 10 minutes after the field was cleared of all things Magglio, the Jeter planted a...
Sunday was a pretty good day for the picks. It was hard to believe that the star pitcher in the
Tigers - Yankees game was Phil Hughes and not Justin Verlander. The observation was
made earlier on Twitter that every time the picks have used the word, "mismatch," this
season, the pick has been wrong. So the new rule should be that whenever the brain thinks
