Today was all about pitchers and injuries as several top starters went on the disabled list and starting pitcher A.J. Burnett made his first start of the season for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Burnett went seven shutout innings against the St. Louis Cardinals using just 76 pitches, while allowing three hits and striking out seven. Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around major league baseball to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 4 (April 23 – April 29) of the 2012 fantasy baseball season. American League: 6 games: BAL, CLE, DET, LAA, MIN, NYY, OAK, SEA, TB, TEX
7 games: BOS, CWS, KC, TOR Hitters: The Boston Red Sox acquired outfielder Marlon Byrd from the Chicago Cubs for pitcher Michael Bowden. With Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford both on the disabled list, Byrd has some short-term value, but he will have a hard time finding at bats once both are healthy. The Tampa Bay Rays activated outfielder B.J. Upton from the disabled list Friday after he missed the start of the season after his collision with Desmond Jennings in spring training. Upton hit seventh in the lineup today and went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Pitchers: The Kansas City Royals placed relief pitcher Greg Holland on the disabled list with a left rib issue. The move helps to solidify Jonathan Broxton as the closer, while Jeremy Jeffress becomes a dark horse candidate for saves after being recalled from the minor leagues. 7 games: NYM, SF Hitters: The St. Louis Cardinals placed first basemen Lance Berkman on the disabled list with a strained calf on Friday. The team will turn to Matt Carpenter in the interim giving Carpenter a lot of value in NL-only leagues for the time being. Pitchers: The Philadelphia Phillies placed starting pitcher Cliff Lee on the disabled list with a strained oblique. Kyle Kendrick will move into the starting rotation and becomes a two start pitcher next week with his first appearance on Monday at Arizona. The Arizona Diamondbacks placed starting pitcher Daniel Hudson on the disabled list with a right shoulder issue. It is a tough break for fantasy owners as Hudson was slated for two starts next week. While there has been no official announcement as to who will replace him in the rotation, Wade Miley is the likely candidate. The Chicago Cubs placed starting pitcher Ryan Dempster on the disabled list with a strained right quad. Randy Wells is expected to take Demspter’s place in the rotation tomorrow. Wells had been getting hit hard at Triple-A and had a 9.42 ERA in 14 1/3 innings with six walks and 10 strikeouts. Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Chris Narveson has a torn rotator cuff and could miss the rest of the season if he elects to undergo surgery. Marco Estrada got the start today for the Brewers and allowed two hits in five innings with no walks and nine strikeouts. To see all of the two start pitchers in week 4, click here.
