CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH (credits below) This week we take a look at two young lefties in Colorado and a two former major leaguer's sons who recently got the call.  SP- CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH (COLORADO)- The 6'4" lefty continues to impress as he struck out 10 batters and allowed only one run last night in seven innings of work. In his first two starts Christian has a 1-0 record, 17 K's, 1.00 WHIP and a 1.38 ERA. Friedrich who shares the same agent as Cliff Lee, worked out with Lee in the off season changing some of the dynamics of his motion and release point. It looks like the youngster will remain in the rotation for the near future with these type of numbers. If you have the roster space he is definitely worth a pick up right now. RP- REX BROTHERS (COLORADO)- Another young Rockie lefty with closer of the future aspirations is the leader in games pitched for all rookies this year with 19. Brothers has suffered the growing pains as many rookies do going 1-2 with a 4.26 ERA...

Predictable ending for Colorado Rockies in San Francisco

Friedrich was the lone bright spot on Monday.Writing about the Colorado Rockies can be tough. When they head to the west coast, the games start late and end late. However, writing about this team is simple, especially on the west coast. To find the words to say is easy. All it takes is looking at the previous years Rockies schedule, spotting when they were in San Francisco, copying...

Moves not paying off for Rockies

To understand the plight of the Colorado Rockies, consider that manager Jim Tracy gave Troy Tulowitzki a day off a week ago in San Diego and actually dropped Tulowitzki to the No. 5 spot in the batting order Sunday at Dodger Stadium. It was the first time Tulowitzki hit anywhere lower than cleanup in the lineup in three years. Tulowitzki is considered the new face of the franchise...

Colorado Rockies avoid disaster thanks to Marco Scutaro home run

Scutaro's first Rockies home run was a game winner.A terrible road trip, one that has made nearly every believer jump off the bandwagon, ended with a bright spot on Tuesday night in San Francisco. The Colorado Rockies won 5-4, thanks to a 9th inning home run from Marco Scutaro, his first in a Rockies uniform. The home run was an unexpected as it gets. The Giants had closer Santiago...

Despite being early, Colorado Rockies looking at a long season

The Rockies need a leader to step up and turn things around.Does this look familiar to anyone else? After a decent start, finishing April close to .500, the Colorado Rockies suddenly forgot how to play baseball. This team was never expected to be phenomenal. No one was predicting them to walk away with the National League West. No one was expecting them to come out and win 100 games...

Christian Friedrich: “Best Shaper” Makes Good

On March 5th, Christian Friedrich was inducted into the annual Best Shape Of His Life club thanks to this MLB.com article from Thomas Harding: Even worse, he had bulked up to 240 pounds by the latter part of the season, partly because of his off-base workouts and partly because he had fallen into the habit of late-night meals. But this winter, Friedrich spent a week and a half training...

Alfonzo's 100-game suspension rescinded on appeal

The 100-game suspension handed down to Colorado Rockies catcher Eliezer Alfonzo for testing positive for a banned substance last September has been rescinded, Major League Baseball announced Monday, and the reason is nearly identical to the one raised when Ryan Braun's suspension was overturned. Alfonzo, 33, served a 50-game suspension in 2008 for violating MLB's drug policy...

Report: Alfonzo's 100-game ban dropped

A person familiar with the decision says Major League Baseball has dropped its 100-game suspension of Colorado Rockies catcher Eliezer Alfonzo for a positive drug test because of the same procedural issues that came up in the Ryan Braun case. Alfonzo is eligible to play immediately, according to the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Sunday night...

Tulowitzki returns after 'freak accident'

Troy Tulowitzki will think twice before standing on the top step of the dugout again. A night after a foul ball by teammate Dexter Fowler struck near his left knee, Tulowitzki returned to Colorado's starting lineup Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants despite some soreness in his leg. Tulowitzki had yet to see a replay of the incident - and isn't sure he'd want...

Brewers sign Vargas to minor league deal

Pitcher Claudio Vargas had retired early last summer after a stint with the Colorado Rockies Triple-A affiliate hadn't gone the way he'd hoped. The 33-year-old had posted an 11.08 ERA before leaving the game for good. But on Wednesday, the company that represents Vargas, Metis Sports Management, announced via Twitter that he'll be making a comeback this season with a...

Jamie Moyer defies age, incredibly keeps pitching at 49

Just in case you have just arisen from a quarter-century nap, don’t be so alarmed by all the changes: Jamie Moyer is still pitching. If you have to re-read that sentence, don’t worry because, at 49, Moyer probably would have to, a result of age-induced nearsightedness. When I took the sportwriter’s oath — a pledge to the gods to do my utmost to avoid breaking a sweat while...

D-backs look to turn things around vs. Rockies

Wins haven't been very plentiful lately for the Arizona Diamondbacks or the Colorado Rockies, but the two teams are each coming into this series off a victory. Judging by Jamie Moyer's recent struggles, the visiting Diamondbacks might have a good chance to start their first winning streak in a little more than two weeks Wednesday night. Arizona (16-21) is 3-10 over its...

Rockies-Giants Preview

The Colorado Rockies' Christian Friedrich impressed in his major league debut last week, slowing down one of the weaker offenses in baseball. He'll get a chance to face another one of the majors' least intimidating lineups in his second start. Friedrich tries to provide the slumping Rockies with another lift Monday night at AT&T Park in the opener of this two-game...

The Colorado Rockies sent catcher Eliezer Alfonzo to Triple-A, where he is on the restricted list until he's able to obtain a visa to travel from Venezuela, after after Major League Baseball dropped... Full story at Bob's Blitz ~ http://www.bobsblitz.com

MLB, union rescind Alfonzo's drug ban

Major League Baseball and the players' union agreed to drop the 100-game suspension imposed on Colorado Rockies catcher Eliezer Alfonzo for a positive drug test because of the same procedural issues that came up in the Ryan Braun case. Alfonzo missed 48 games -- the final 15 of last season and the first 33 of this year. Braun's 50-game suspension for a positive drug test...

Postgame Wrap: Brothersly Love

I can’t wait until Christian Friedrich’s next start. He’ll be found after the game, sitting in the team shower, shivering under the shower head, shivering in his soaking uniform. “B-b-but I threw the ball! How did they hit it?” Rockies Pitching Coach Bob Apodaca will turn off the shower tap, and slide down next to Friedrich. “Son, you’re going to have to learn sooner...
