Welcome to the first 2013 installment of the Rookie Report. Each week I’ll highlight a few rookies who have consistent playing time, see how they’ve done and try to predict what we’ll see from them in the future. Also, since the minor-league season just started today, starting next week I’ll write up a few bullet points about several top minor leaguers to see how they’ve been doing and when/if we might expect them to come up to the big leagues this summer. Jedd Gyorko | 3B | San Diego – Gyorko won a spot with the Padres due to a hot start in spring training and a combination of injuries to Chase Headley and Logan Forsythe. So far, in three games against the Mets Gyorko’s 3-for-12 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI. He’s struck out twice while being fairly underwhelming at the plate in his first taste of big-league action, which isn’t shocking. Gyorko finished spring training with 16 strikeouts, only three walks and an OBP of .286. Now, in facing three quality starters in Jon Nies...

Video: Jackie Bradley, Jr. First MLB Hit

Here is video of Jackie Bradley Jr's single through the middle for his first MLB hit that plated Shane Victorino to give the Boston Red Sox a 4-0 lead in the 3rd inning on Wednesday night. Follow Ian on Twitter @soxanddawgs. And be sure to like us on Facebook as well.

Padres 2, Mets 1

Jedd Gyorko doubled in the go-ahead run in the fourth inning for his first major league RBI, and the San Diego Padres beat the New York Mets 2-1 Thursday for their first win of the season. Eric Stults (1-0) and five relievers combined on a five-hitter and struck out 14 for the Padres, who had not led in their first two games. Mets starter Dillon Gee (0-1) returned from shoulder...

Question For Dan Shaughnessy Fans (Yes, They Do Exist)

Something I’m curious about. For those of you out there who enjoy Dan Shaughnessy, and I know you are out there, presumably you’re drawn to his style of ripping down athletes and teams and taking shots and carrying grudges. How do you feel when he writes columns which go to a hyperbolic level in the other direction, such as the ones from the last two days? Yesterday’s Jackie...

Red Sox 7, Yankees 4

Clay Buchholz chilled the Yankees' bats, speedy Jackie Bradley Jr. got his first major league hit and the Boston Red Sox beat New York 7-4 on a cold Wednesday night to open a season with consecutive wins for the first time since 1999. Pitcher Hiroki Kuroda became the latest Yankees player to get hurt, leaving in the second inning with a 2-0 deficit, four batters after Shane...

Jam it or Cram it: Jackie Bradley Jr vs. Gerardo Parra

An exciting kickoff to the 2013 MLB season. I’m sure  Ken Burns documented it all with black and white photos, mournful fiddle music and the soothing voice of Doris Kearns Goodwin. But, in case you missed it, here’s… The good: Yu Darvish nearly perfect, 2-homer opener for Bryce Harper,  Michael Morse pretends he’s Hammerin’ Hank and Heidi Watney’s tight black dress...

Jay-Z might represent Dustin Pedroia or Jackie Bradley Jr.

Remember the days when Scott Boras - sports agent extraordinaire - use to bend Red Sox management over a railing and demand whatever random excessive number they (Boras and client) decided was worthy of their John Hancock? Well it’s the same story only different characters will play the part of said sports agent. Roc Nation mogul Shawn Carter (a.k.a. Jay-Z) will venture his...

MLB Game Picks - Sunday: April 7, 2013

The first week of Major League Baseball for 2013 is in the books. Yeah, I am a traditional Sunday to Saturday type guy. The Game Picks had a good first week. After a 10-10 first few days, the picks went 37-19 over the last four days with a 10-5 day again yesterday. Now if I can just get over my obsession with picking the Astros, I will be okay. The best pick of yesterday was choosing...

Game 6 Preview: Pirates at Dodgers

Pirates (1-4) at Dodgers (3-2) 4:10 PM–Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Pirates look to avoid a series sweep (or at least avoid a series shutout) today against the Dodgers. They’ve dropped eight straight at Dodger Stadium and have obviously been completely dreadful at the plate so far this year. It’s gotta change some time soon.. Tonight’s starters…...

Red Sox pound Yankees again

Clay Buchholz chilled the Yankees' bats, speedy Jackie Bradley Jr. got his first major-league hit and the Boston Red Sox beat New York, 7-4, on a cold Wednesday night to open a season with consecutive wins for the first time since 1999. Pitcher Hiroki Kuroda became the latest Yankees player to get hurt, leaving in the second inning with a 2-0 deficit, four batters after Shane...

Recap: Sox continue winning ways, beat Yanks 7-4

What was considered to be a much anticipated match-up, turned out to be not much of a contest at all. In the second game of the 2013 season, Clay Buchholz took the mound for the Red Sox, while established veteran Hiroki Kuroda started for the Yankees. In the first inning, C Jarrod Saltalamacchia lined a timely two-out single to right field, putting the Red Sox on top quickly. In...
