So, work conspired against me this week and I’m a day late, but hopefully not a dollar short. We haven’t seen any huge trades yet, but as we head into the All-Star break, we could start to see some movement as teams look to solidify the pen with a run into October as the goal. We’ve got a lot of quick hitters below so let’s dive right in. Arizona Diamondbacks The Diamondbacks have no closer according to GM Kevin Towers. I covered the D’backs in depth last week so I won’t go back over the combatants in as much depth as I did last week. J.J. Putz is back into the setup role after being moved into earlier game situations. Putz has five clean appearances since the demotion and has holds in his last two times on the hill. He’s making his move back toward the closer’s role. I don’t think anything gets decided until after the All-Star break. Brad Ziegler picked up a save this week and he’s most likely among these guys to be available in your league. Ziegler has closed previously (with the ...

What to do with Tyler Skaggs?

Tyler Skaggs is in an interesting place in his baseball career. It seems to happen to many youngsters, often times more so to pitchers. Skaggs is in a weird little spot where he’s outgrown the minor leagues, but hasn’t shown the type of performance in the majors consistently enough to justify his unconditional stay with the big league club.

Corbin caps dominant first half with dominant win

PHOENIX -- There could hardly have been a better way for Diamondbacks left-hander Patrick Corbin to warm up for his first All-Star appearance. Corbin overcame a wild first inning Friday night to shut down the Brewers in a 2-1 win before he heads to New York, where he'll pitch for the NL All-Star Team after an improbable and stellar first half. "I just wanted to finish...

Despite rough first half, Ian Kennedy still heads rotation

It’s no secret that Ian Kennedy has struggled in the first half, carrying a 5.42 ERA, good for second worst among National League starters, into the All-Star break. But following his loss on Sunday to the Brewers, manager Kirk Gibson was asked about the rotation’s order heading into the second half. Per Arizona Sports 620′s Kyndra de St. Aubin, Gibson will use Kennedy in the...

Another lackluster outing for D-backs' struggling Kennedy

PHOENIX -- When Kirk Gibson makes a mound visit, it usually is to make a pitching change. This one was to make a point. Strongly. Gibson looked Ian Kennedy in the eye and delivered a message that lip readers might not want to pass along to their children when he went out in the second inning Sunday, after Kennedy had permitted seven of the Brewers' first 12 batters to reach...

D-backs raise more than 700,000 for Yarnell victims

PHOENIX The Arizona Diamondbacks have raised 705,395 in support of the families of the 19 firefighters who perished fighting the Yarnell fire as well as members of the community who have been affected by the fires. The money was raised in various fundraising efforts that began two days after the June 30 tragedy and throughout the D-backs 10-game homestand. The funds raised throughout...

Matt Davidson named MVP, others impress in Futures Game

While there were many good individual performances, no organization had more impressive showings from their group of prospects than the Arizona Diamondbacks did at today’s All-Star Futures Game at Citi Field.

Trevor Cahill encouraged after bullpen session

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Trevor Cahill, who has been on the disabled list since July 1 with a hip contusion and recent shoulder soreness, threw 20 pitches in a bullpen session on Thursday and "felt pretty good." As reported by Steve Gilbert of MLB.com, "Cahill said, ""t's the first time I've taken multiple days off during the season, so...

Return of the Mac: Brandon McCarthy nears recovery from shoulder inflammation

The long road back to the mound for Brandon McCarthy, appears to finally have an end in sight. The lanky right-hander will report to Triple-A Reno this weekend, to make the first of at least two projected rehab starts after being out of action since May 31st, with shoulder inflammation. After successfully completing a 65-pitch simulated game on Sunday, the next step on the agenda...

Buy Low Candidate: Ian Kennedy

The former 21 game winner has definitely had a roller coaster of a first half. After another disappointing outing against Milwaukee yesterday, he is 3-6 with a 5.42 ERA. Typically selected somewhere between rounds 10-12 in drafts during the preseason, Kennedy's numbers are just unacceptable to this point. Control, or lack thereof, is the main issue of concern. So far, his BB...

D-backs follow script with another comeback

PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks have beaten the Brewers this weekend they way they have worked their way to the top of the NL West this season -- with a twist. As has happened, they fell behind early. They rallied. And, new to this series, they navigated the final innings with a situational bullpen that has adapted well. The result: a 5-4 victory at Chase Field that supplied further...

Almost get blown up, Randy Johnson Style

Diamondbacks 2, Brewers 1

Patrick Corbin was all over the place at the start of the game. Fortunately for the Arizona Diamondbacks, he settled down in time to put together another great performance. Corbin matched a career high with 10 strikeouts for the second straight start, and the Diamondbacks beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Friday night. Corbin (11-1) allowed a run and seven hits in 6 2-3 innings...

Diamondbacks 5, Brewers 4

Didi Gregorius hit one of Arizona's three solo home runs and drove in the tying run during a three-run seventh inning and the Diamondbacks rallied to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 on Saturday night. Miguel Montero and Jason Kubel also went deep and Eric Chavez drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in the go-ahead run for the Diamondbacks, who have won three straight overall and...

Corbin dominant, bullpen comes through in D-Backs win

With his effort on Friday night, Patrick Corbin made his case to Bruce Bochy for him to start for the National League in the All-Star Game on Tuesday night.

Long ball leads Diamondbacks to win over Brewers

What a streaky team these Diamondbacks are. With Saturday night’s 5-4 win over the Brewers, the Snakes have now won three straight following their sweep at the hand of the Dodgers, which followed a five game win streak. The win was their 26th comeback victory of the year, second in the National League only to the Braves.
