With college baseball coming to a close, the 2013 MLB draft is on the horizon. There is a new wave of prospects about to hit the pros and teams are eager to sign. The talent is at an all time high with the number of first-rounder’s this year and the Mets have a good chance of signing a top prospect in their 11th overall pick. The Mets have a predominantly young team that may work in their favor for draft selection. In previous years, the Mets were in need for specific positions, which determined their 2012 selections. Adding a shortstop, Gavin Cecchini, and catcher, Kevin Plawecki had great impact on the organization and farm system.  However, this year is a little different being that the team could use strengths in many positions on the diamond. Pitching remains to be one of the Mets consistent strengths. Drafting Matt Harvey in the 2010 draft as the 7th overall pick was one of the smartest decisions from the organization to date. The right-handed starter continues to amaze the league with a perfect record of 5-0 and a 2.17 ERA. Sports Illustrated referred to him as “The Dark Knight.” So where will improvement be needed this year? A power outfielder or a scrappy infielder with a quick bat could make a good selection or drafting a pitcher is always a strategic choice. Looking at the YTD standings from a Major league standpoint, the team seems to be lacking offensively. Gaining a strong bat and power-hitter could boost the farm system and fill the gap the team is lacking. A trend under General Manager, Sandy Alderson, and Vice President of scouting, Paul DePodesta, the past two years are selecting high school talent. A couple of high school star outfielders and hot topics amongst the draft are, Austin Meadows and Clint Frazier. A few other top names to add are: University of San Diego’s third-baseman, Kris Bryant, North Carolina’s third-baseman, Colin Moran, and Mississippi State’s outfielder, Hunter Renfroe. All position players would be a great addition offensively to the organization. Will they be around come the 11th pick is questionable but the Mets are keeping an eye and showing interest amongst the rest of the 30 teams. Another area the Mets need to be aware of is their draft budget. Under the updated Collective Bargaining Agreement between Major League Baseball and the Player’s Association, teams no longer have slot recommendations. Now, any professional club can go over or under the assigned dollar amount for that specific draft pick. Each team is distributed a bonus pool. This pool is determined by the number of picks and how early in the draft the picks are. The Mets currently have a total of $6.99 million bonus pool and an average amount of $2.84 million for their first pick. It will eventually be up to DePodesta and Alderson to decide how much they want to spend on each player, however, they also must keep in mind to not overspend and potentially lose future draft picks. Looking back, the Mets have been successful in their draft selections. Matt Harvey is a popular hot topic amongst baseball news and has been compared to a young Andy Pettite or Justin Verlander. Catcher and power hitter, Kevin Plaweki, shows a promising career ahead of him already dominating the South Atlantic League and possibly heading into high A soon. The MLB draft always comes through selecting the top prospects from that year but also could surprise with appearances and talent not all over the baseball headlines. The draft can be unpredictable and decisions are made quickly. In just a few short days, America’s favorite pastime will fulfill dreams and birth life-long careers. The 2013 draft will be held this Thursday night June 6th covering rounds 1 and 2, Friday rounds 3-10, and Saturday for the remaining 30 rounds.
