TEAMS: New York Mets

For some time now we’ve heard how the New York Mets are looking to raise around $200 million by selling multiple $20 million minority stakes in the team before the end of February.  According to Bill Shaiken of the Los Angeles Times, it appears as though Steve Cohen, “the billionaire investor, in the running for purchase of the Dodgers, is on the verge of buying a share of the Mets. ”

Shaiken goes on to write:

Cohen is expected to spend $20 million on one of 10 shares offered for sale by the Mets’ cash-strapped owners. The Mets are expected to use the proceeds to repay a $40-million loan to Bank of America and a $25-million loan to MLB.  If Cohen were to buy the Dodgers, he would have to sell his stake in the Mets.

However, by helping the Mets and principal owner Fred Wilpon now, Cohen could be in a favorable position to buy the Mets outright if the team were put up for sale and the Dodgers were sold to another party.”

I’ve held out longer than most when it came to piling on the anti-Wilpon bandwagon because the years leading up to this I felt as though they did their job as owners; they spent money.  Was it spent well?  Probably not, but to me that’s more the job of the GM and his staff than the owners.  The past 2 years, however, this has not been the case and this offseaoson it has become wildly evident that the team will suffer because they do not have the resources to address glaring needs.  That lack of resources is a direct reflection on their ownership situation.

As Shaiken points out:

The Mets lost $70 million last year and cut payroll by $52 million this year, and the owners face up to $386 million in potential liability related to the Bernie Madoff scandal, according to reports.”

The time has come to see new blood run through the veins of the Mets ownership and hopefully this will be the beginning of a better situation because frankly, the players as well as the fans deserve as much.

Mets Card of the Week: 1987 Bob Ojeda

1987 SPORTFLICS BOB OJEDA These first-wave Sportflics cards deserve a cult of their own. Now, the less said about the mid ’90′s Second Coming of the brand, the better. Those sets were more Stone Roses Second Coming than the Jesus kind… But these mid ’80s cards were out there kicking against the pricks. The hobby back then was a stodgy place, and the cigar...

Jon Stewart takes jab at Mets during Moneyball interview

We’re big Jon Stewart fans here at The Legend. Actually, let me not speak for the rest of the editorial staff. I am a big Jon Stewart fan. And Stewart  shares as least one thing with Cecilio’s Scribe. He’s a fan of the New York Mets. So, we’re both sorry bastards in that regard. Fortunately for Stewart, he has a national platform to playfully and brilliantly...

How Optimistic (or Pessimistic) Should New York Mets Fans Be Heading Into 2012?

Over at Metsblog.com there have been a couple of discussions about what is expected of the New York Mets this season.  On the pessimistic side, a scout explained why he doesn’t see the New York Mets cracking 70 wins this season.  On the optimistic side, a fan asks if the same squad can manage 85 wins if a few things break right.  I am definitely closer to the pessimistic...

LHBs with connection to the front office

I know for some this is a repetitive topic, but let's face there is absolutely nothing to talk about in regard to the Mets. It's amazing how little they done and how long it's been, the last signing was Ronny Cedano on January 12th. They haven't even signed anyone to a minor league deal with an invitee to camp, Tuiasosopo will go straight to minor league camp....

Daniel Murphy: Spark plug

Well it’s suddenly February and that big football game is only a few days away. And you know what my favorite part of the Super Bowl is? No, the thought of seeing Tom Brady miserable, or seeing what kind of weird/creepy/funny commercial ETrade has in store for us. No, it’s more of the fact that as soon as the game is over, it’s baseball time. Pitchers and catchers are due...
