Both enjoyed great success with the Cubs during their MLB careers.
Both won one Cy Young award while pitching at Wrigley Field.
Both went on to enjoy success elsewhere before returning to the Cubs organization in the twilight of their careers, and both are among four pitchers in Major league history with 3,000-plus strikeouts and fewer than 1,000 walks.
Very impressive. And both were the only pitchers in either league to ever defeat every team in the league during a season, Jenkins in 1971 and Maddux in 1992.
Jenkins was a workhouse during his era, while Maddux helped re-define the term during his heyday.
Maddux is a sure first-ballot Hall-of-Famer, while Jenkins was elected to the shrine in 1991.
Maddux is also arguably the best pitcher in what will probably be deemed the “steroid era” when the history books are re-written, coming along during a time when other greats such as Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens, Pedro Martinez, Tom Glavine, also enjoyed Cooperstown-worthy careers.
Here are 31 fun facts about the two you may not know, but are certainly worth repeating. And just 31 of the numerous reasons why they will have No. 31 retired by the organization.
1). Jenkins went 24-13 during his Cy Young campaign in 1971. He had a 2.77 ERA with 263 strikeouts against an astounding 37 walks. He pitched 30 complete games. Let me say that again 30 COMPLETE GAMES. That is unheard of today. And oh by the way, he batted .282 with six home runs and 20 RBIs. Not too shabby.
2) Maddux Cubs career began as a pinch runner in the 17th inning of an 18-inning game. He later pitched the 18th inning, giving up a home run to Billy Hatcher and taking the loss.
3) Jenkins went 167-132 with all three of his All-Star appearances (1967, 1971, 1972) coming with the Cubs.
4) Maddux has won 20 games just twice in his career, including his 2002 Cy Young season with the Cubs. Maddux was 20-11 with a 2.18 ERA. He pitched nine complete games and recorded 199 strikeouts against 77 walks.
