Found July 30, 2008 on Another Cubs Blog:
I lost the internet connection in the 8th inning so I'm writing this as the game is still going on. At the moment, the Cubs lead 5-1 and Ryan Dempster was just taken out after warming up in the bottom of the 8th, but Rickie Weeks was announced as a pinch hitter and Lou went to Chad Gaudin. Dempster is in line to improve to 12-4 with an ERA below 3. He's been nothing short of fantastic this year and maybe even just dominating. He's allowed the lowest batting average against in the National League. The Cubs got on the board early in this one. They scored 2 in the 1st inning, one of them with the help of the Brewers defense, which has helped a lot of teams over the last 2 years. Parra struck out Reed Johnson and the ball got past Jason Kendall all the way back to the backstop. It was ruled a wild pitch. Soriano came in to score the 1st run of the game. DeRosa then singled in Lee and the Cubs led 2-0. The only Brewers run so far, now going to the 9th after Gaudin retired the Brewers in order, was in the 1st, also on a wild pitch. The Cubs added 3 more in the 6th and chased Manny Parra from the game. Against the 3 best Brewers starters, the Cubs have scored 15 runs. They've hit each of them hard and putting runs on the board early and relatively often has not at all been a problem. One of the things this Cubs team did early on was beat good pitchers. They've done that in this series. With the trade deadline tomorrow, I'm assuming several smaller deals are going to be made across the league for relief pitchers. The Cubs already got one in Chad Gaudin (not that they don't need another one). Guadin has been outstanding with the Cubs. Small sample size, of course, but in now 11.2 innings with the Cubs, he's allowed 8 his, 2 earned runs, walked 1 and struckout 13. Getting back to this series, the Cubs have held the Brewers to 6 runs and 19 hits in 3 games (7 runs and 21 hits). The Cubs, on the other hand, have scored 18 runs and have 40 hits. Theriot just walked in a run so make that 19 runs as the Cubs now lead 6-1.
