The New York Mets scored nine runs, but it wasn’t enough as they dropped the series opener to the Colorado Rocies last night:

Starting in place of the injured Mike Pelfrey, Chris Swinden allowed six runs — five earned — on seven hits while failing to get out of the fifth inning:

“This wasn’t a good way to go out and show myself,” Schwinden told reporters following his poor outing. “But, hopefully I get another opportunity to do that.”

Terry Collins, however, said the youngster will get another opportunity to show he belong, adding that the rookie will start again on Wednesday in Houston:

[Schwinden] is going to get an extended look. We brought him here for that and we’ll give him an opportunity to show us what he can do.”

5TH INNING DEBACLE: After the Mets took a four-run lead in the top half of the fifth inning, the Rockies responded with an 11-run bottom half that featured 11 runs (10 earned) on four errors and seven hits, including a pair of three-run homeruns. The first by Carlos Gonzalez off starter Chris Schwinden.  The second 3-run jack came off the bat of Dexter Fowler against Manny Acosta; who allowed seven runs during the frame.

HISTORIC NIGHT OVERSHADOWED: Scott Hairston became one of ten players in franchise history to hit for the cycle.

It was great while it was happened, but when they kept scoring runs, it just really wasn’t that enjoyable, to say the leas. … I think I got to 3-2 [in the fourth at-bat]. Anywhere close I was going to try to drive the ball. And I was able to do that. It was great while it lasted. It’s definitely bittersweet. … It’s a big feat. It’s something a lot of players can’t say they’ve done. I’m proud of that.”

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, here are the others:

  • Jose Reyes (June 21, 2006 vs. Cincinnati)
  • Eric Valent (July 29, 2004 at Montreal)
  •  John Olerud (Sept. 11, 1997 vs. Montreal)
  •  Alex Ochoa (July 3, 1996 at Philadelphia)
  •  Kevin McReynolds (Aug. 1, 1989 at St. Louis)
  •  Keith Hernandez (July 4, 1985 at Atlanta)
  •  Mike Phillips (June 25, 1976 at Chicago)
  •  Tommie Agee (July 6, 1970 vs. St. Louis)
  •  Jim Hickman (Aug. 7, 1963 vs. St. Louis)

NINE RUNS JUST WASN’T ENOUGH: Four Mets batters collected extra hits, two of which (Scott Hairston and Ruben Tejada) had four each:

THERE’S ALWAYS TOMORROW: Dillon Gee will look to help the Mets rebound from Friday night’s disaster as he squares off against Jeremy Guthrie.
