I think I'm taking the 2008 Cubs for granted. I headed to my car for my commute home last night just as the Phillies were scoring three runs in the sixth. And even with Cole Hamels carving up the lineup, I never thought we were out of it. I tuned into XM radio by that point and it had Pat and Ron going and Pat was carrying on that the Phils bullpen has been worked hard lately. If the Cubs could just work up  that pitch count up on Hamels. If he could go eight, the Phils would just go to Brad Lidge which probably wouldn't have done the Cubs much good considering he's a perfect 31 for 31 in save opportunities. The key was to get into the pen before that. After seven, Hamels was up to 108 pitches but due up third, and Charlie Manuel obliged by pinch hitting for him. Boom. Mike Fontenot goes yard on Ryan Madson. As I heard Bob Brenly say on the replay, "ABH - Anybody but Hamels". Next up, Soriano sounds like he just missed one for a double. After...

Cub Fan Logic

A lot of talk out there about a certain Presidential hopeful's experience and whether he has the credentials for the job. A few days ago, Stuart Scott of ESPN asked a Barack Obama who he would root for in a Cubs-White Sox World Series. His response?"Oh, that's easy. White Sox. I'm not one of these fair weather fans. You go to Wrigley Field, you have a beer, beautiful people up there...

A Trip Around the Minors...

In this week's ATAtM, the Cubs system has a busload full of succesful relievers, Jovan Rosa may have set a record for most extra base hits out of a power spot with only one RBI, and much, much more!IowaFelix Pie-Pie has been getting a lot of AB's and a lot of hits of late. This week, he went 9 for 27 in 6 games (averaging a hit and a half per game, while averaging 4 and a half AB...

Eighth Inning Dooms Phillies Again

Yesterday I wrote about the possible need for a veteran setup man to work late innings. (...)

Will The Phillies Resign Burrell?

Phillies outfielder Pat Burrell is having a pretty solid year, hitting .261 with 30 HR, but that doesn't mean the Phillies will throw a big contract at him. They have opened their wallets for several players already, and Burrell, 32, isn't in the Phillies long term plans. While the Phillies have talked with Burell, I doubt they are willing to give him the same deal he signed...

Cole-lossal bullpen meltdown for Phillies

Stop me if you've heard this one before: the Phillies wasted a Cole Hamels start. Hamels cruised against the Cubs for 7 innings, striking out 6 batters and giving up only 1 run. With the Phillies up 4-1, Hamels was relieved in the 8th inning by Ryan Madson, and the floodgates opened for the Cubs. Madsen failed to get an out, giving up a homer and a pair of hits before he gave way...

Phils Blow Another Lead At Wrigley

For the third game in a row, the Phillies blew a lead with a member of the bullpen on the hill. And for the third game in a row, the Phillies lost. (...)

Obama Takes a Jab at Cubs Fans

Presidential candidate Barack Obama recently sat down with ESPN's Stuart Scott for an interview that will air next week, I'm led to believe. There was one particular clip from the interview that can be construed as controversial. Eamonn Brennan at the brand new blog over at MOUTHPIECE SPORTS (we're on strict order to [...]

Hamels Elbow Would Have Exploded!

Message to Charlie Manuel- quit counting the damn pitches. Cole Hamels should have pitched the 8th inning, instead asshat Ryan Madson blew the game. To paraphrase Jay-Z- If you're havin' 'pen problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 pitches so I can't throw one. Click on the URL for the full article containg more reasoning for allowing Hamels to pitch...

Mets Pitchers vs Phillies : 2008 Edition

If you want to get sick, take a look at the Mets vs the Phillies in 2008. Even though the Mets own a 9-5 record against them they still manage to do some damage against us. Phillies acquire Matt Stairs

With the waiver deadline looming on August 31st, the Phillies have been searching for one more bat off the bench, and they have finally acquired one. Left-handed hitter Matt Stairs was recently designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays, and now the Phillies have acquired him for a prospect. As of now, the identity of that prospect is unknown, but it won't be a top-end...

Phillies Recall Carpenter

The Phillies bullpen was nothing short of spectacular last night. They allowed only one run on four hits in ten innings of work. Unfortunately they used every bullpen arm they had and actually had tonight's starter, Kyle Kendrick ready to pitch the 14th inning. Given the needed rest the bullpen needs this evening, the Phillies have recalled pitcher Andrew Carpenter. Carpenter...

How the tides have changed!

Today every Mets fan is waking up a little uneasy. Everyone who watched the game last night thought we were going to have a laugher but turned out being a slobber. The Mets are not in first place and today is the first day we have flashbacks of 2007. The Mets have their ace on the mound, Johan Santana who has to put his best foot forward against our nemesis. Even if Santana...

Delgado and Mets take back first place, win 6-3

Johan Santana was unable to hold it down by himself as he pitched 6 innings, giving up 5 hits, 3 runs, while walking 3, and striking out 5. He got the no decision......... Carlos Delgado has become "Bat Man" hitting two more HR's , driving in 3 runs. Dan Murphy got the go ahead run in with a RBI double in the eighth. The Bullpen was excellent starting with Brian Stokes...

Thursday: Delgado sinks Phillies, Mets back in front

Carlos Delgado went 3-for-4 with two home runs including a game-tying solo shot, setting the table for a four-run eighth inning in the Mets 6-3 win at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies finish their homestand 7-2. Circumstances were a little different in last night's contest because of the depleted bullpens, but make it two straight Phillies losses that occurred in the eighth inning...
