A look at the Reds' future first baseman
3 Comments:
  • Personally, I would have made Votto the starting 1b last Opening Day, instead of this one. I hope the Reds made it clear to Hatteberg when they re-signed him, that he would be coming off the bench a lot...as I imagine Votto will and should get most of the starts at 1b this season. Now, if the Reds will just back off this whole Erik Bedard for Jay Bruce nonsense, things will really start to look up for the Reds future.
  • I agree. I'm not a big fan of sending prospects for big names. I think a small market team like the Reds can't afford to auction off it's farm system for one or two star players that we probably won't be able to afford. Votto had developed into a nice first baseman, can't wait to see what he can do in a full season.
  • I respected the Reds desire to acquire a stud pitcher like Bedard, but to trade away a player the calibre of Jay Bruce for a guy who may not pitch in Cincy for more than 1 season...would set the organization back another 5-10 years, I believe. I'm glad they've backed off the trade...they need to build around Phillips, Bruce, Votto, Encarnacion, and Bailey to be competitive in the future.
