If you read my opinion on starting pitchers yesterday, then you probably won't be surprised by my opinion on closers. Closers are the single most over-rated players in fantasy baseball drafts. Last season the top closers, ranked by saves, were Jose Valverde, Joe Borowski, Francisco Cordero, Trevor Hoffman, and Francisco Rodriguez. K-Rod was going in the fourth round in most drafts. Hoffman was going around the seventh round. The top three came with a much better price. Cordero went in the 11th round, Valverde in the 16th round, and Borowski in the 18th round.
People continue to take guys like K-Rod way too early, with the excuse that they are "Guaranteeing the save category." Why pass up a guy like Prince Fielder to draft K-Rod, or Alex Rios to draft Hoffman, when you can have capable options much, much later? I guess it's because you don't want to miss out on A.J.
