If you read my opinion on starting pitchers yesterday, then you probably won't be surprised by my opinion on closers. Closers are the single most over-rated players in fantasy baseball drafts. Last season the top closers, ranked by saves, were Jose Valverde, Joe Borowski, Francisco Cordero, Trevor Hoffman, and Francisco Rodriguez. K-Rod was going in the fourth round in most drafts. Hoffman was going around the seventh round. The top three came with a much better price. Cordero went in the 11th round, Valverde in the 16th round, and Borowski in the 18th round. People continue to take guys like K-Rod way too early, with the excuse that they are "Guaranteeing the save category." However, you can find a guy to get you 30 or more saves just as easily in the later rounds of the draft, and most of the time through the waiver wire. Why pass up a guy like Prince Fielder to draft K-Rod, or Alex Rios to draft Hoffman, when you can have capable options much, much later? I guess it's because you don't want to miss out on A.J. Pierzynski instead of taking Jose Valverde. Not Worth the Price People get too caught up in having the best of a certain item at times to realize what they are spending on that item. Jonathan Papelbon and J.J. Putz are great closers, but...
