Found April 18, 2009 on The Tribe Daily:
There are some days where it's just fun to kick back and lay a licking on another team.

That was one of those days today.

And... Well tomorrow we need to forget about it.. But today we need to laugh our friggin asses off.

If you want the complete box score for the 2nd inning, check my earlier post.

I'm about to run through the awesomeness that was the entire box score.

First some initial facts about the 14 run inning, which I'm sure we'll hear more about in the coming days. Stats are always coming out about this type of stuff.

  • This was a franchise-worst for the Yankees. They've never given up 14 runs or 13 hits in an inning before.
  • This tied the highest scoring inning for the Indians, the last time they scored 14 runs was back in 1950 with a 14 run first against Philadelphia.
  • The last time someone scored 14 runs in one inning was 2003. Carl Pavano was the mastermind behind that one.
  • I laughed approximately 5 times during the half-inning. Then 2 more times in the next half when I realized they weren't coming back.
  • This is the second time in the past five years the Indians have scored 22 runs on the Yankees in the Bronx.

Fan-freaking-tastic! Woohoo! and That ain't sarcasm boy.

In my mind this tops the one from 2004. Why? The big inning and the fact that this was so much funnier because it was in their new palace, the crowd was chanting for the right fielder midway through the second, and this set an early standard for their stadium. Clean slate baby.

Anyway here are my thoughts, I'll try not to laugh anymore.

Hahahaha

No I won't.. I'll do it the whole time.

Grady Sizemore got just five at-bats in this massacre. They all came in the first five innings. His three hits and three runs scored were enough. Sizemore also doubled twice with the solo home run. Trevor Crowe replaced him in the outfield and made a diving catch. Crowe picked up where Grady left off with a 1-2 game and a run batted in.

Mark DeRosa knocked in runs every way possible. He hit a two-run double, a one-run single, and a three-run home run. DeRosa had four hits and scored twice.

Victor Martinez also had a short day with just four at-bats. He homered and singled though to knock in two runs. Kelly Shoppach didn't do much in his two at-bats.

Travis Hafner had a rather quiet day until he hit the solo shot in the 8th inning. He was a few feet away from hitting a grand slam in the 9th though. Hafner did have a huge part in that 14 run inning though, getting on base twice, once to start the entire thing off. His home run was to the opposite field and mighty impressive.

There is now a three-way tie for the lead, Sizemore, Hafner, and Martinez all have 4.

Jhonny Peralta was kind of awesome too. His three hits came in a row I believe. He scored three times and knocked in two. He was quiet awesome in that 14 run inning as well.

Shin-Soo Choo basically threw the initial log on the fire of that inning with his three run home run. I was kind of calmed when he did it, especially after Carmona gave up that two-run shot in the first.

Ryan Garko was kind of ho-hum as well. He had committed the first out in that big inning, but by the time they got around to him again no more outs had been committed. He managed to get a hit and he'd knock in the 15th run an inning later. He had two hits and a run scored.

Benny-Fresh committed one of the outs in that inning. But he did have a double the first go-around. He didn't really come through in his RBI opportunities, but he scored three times.

Finally.. The star was definitely Asdrubal Cabrera, who hit the big grand slam and had four hits in six at-bats. He also had an RBI single (same inning as the grand slam) to total 5 RBI. He scored three times as well.

Wow... The pitching isn't getting much talk, but let me talk about the Yankee pitching. It's just as fun as the boxscore.

You thought what Wang gave up was bad?

Anthony Claggett who relieved Wang in the second inning gave up one more hit and two more walks but the same amount of runs as Wang did, 8. His ERA is 43.20.. That is hilarious.

Jed Clappet.

Every Yankee pitcher gave up at least one run. Ramirez gave up just half of what both Wang and Claggett gave up, 4 runs.

Okay our pitching.

Like I said about Fausto, he got me worried. That right-field porch is obviously a little bogus, so I wasn't really worried about him giving up the jacks but more like the confidence. So obviously scoring 14 was pretty good. He was able to throw strikes the rest of the way through. He kind of did, but he started to get bad towards the end.

Carmona did give us six, I was hoping for seven, but he walked four and gave up six hits and four runs. The pair of two-run shots where the cause, but we'll take it I guess.

He still needs to get himself straightened out with the control.

Masa Kobayashi was spectacular again. I don't understand. Two PERFECT, yes PERFECT, innings of work. 20 pitches, 2 innings, bing, bang, boom he was done. Should we be scared he's carrying a 1.35 ERA in 5 games?

Vinnie Chulk closed it out, but as Joe Buck astutley pointed out, didn't get the save, after giving up a walk and a triple that was caused by the collision in the outfield by Choo and Crowe.

More fun facts.

  • 9 Indians knocked in at least one run, Francisco was the lone starter to not knock in a run
  • All 9 starters scored at least one run
  • 5 Indians scored 3 times
  • 10 Indians got a hit, Kelly Shoppach who had two at-bats was the only one without
  • Mark DeRosa and Travis Hafner got seven at-bats each.
  • The Indians sent 58 hitters to the plate
  • The Indians hit six home runs, 3 Solo Shots, 2 Three-Run Shots, and a Grand Slam
  • The Yankees only struck out once, compared to the Indians 10
  • The Indians were retired in order just twice, the first inning and the seventh.
  • The Indians still managed to leave 24 runners combined on-base. Travis Hafner was responsbile for six after he struck out and flew out with the bases loaded twice. Francisco left six on as well. Sizemore, Martinez, and DeRosa(7 at-bats remember) left none on.

22 Runs, 25 hits, and many more laughs later, I'm still a little pumped. Once 1:05 hits tomorrow though, this is has to be a distant memory and we have to win the series. A 3-1 series win would be huge. You can score 22 runs all you want, but it only equals one win.

Carl Pavano takes on former Marlin teammate A.J. Burnett. Should be intriguing either way.
