The country was captivated in the summer of 1998 by the home-run chase as Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs and Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals simultaneously chased Roger Maris' single season home-run record. As the season neared a close the two managed to keep the pressure on each other night in and night out to go yard. America was hooked on baseball, tuning in each night to see these two sluggers battle it out to see who would be the new long ball champion.Fast forward a decade and the fog of greatness is slowly disappearing around many of baseball's former greats as the steroid scandal that has gripped MLB over the past few years is showing no prejudice in who it tears down. In 2005 when interest in steroid use shot up, McGwire, Sosa, and Rafael Palmeiro went in front of Congress to declare their innocence and deny knowledge of other "juicing". All three players sat in front of Congress and swore under oath they had never used steroids, ever. By this time many had begun wo...

Sammy May Have To Wait A Long Time

The former Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa, put out a statement recently that he was expecting to "calmly wait" till he was voted in baseball's Hall of Fame.  Then about a week later, news came out that he was one of the 104 players on a list from 2003 that said certain players had tested positive for "performance enhancing drugs."How this list got documented, who has a copy of...

All’s Quiet on the Sammy Sosa Front … Except For the Clumsy Defense from Paul Konerko

This is Steve Wilstein, the former AP baseball writer who, at the height of the McGwire-Sosa home run competition in the fraudulent summer of 1998, dared to ask Big Red, “What’s this andro stuff in your locker?” (paraphrased). He was branded a snooper by ornery Cards skipper Tony LaRussa. In an ironic twist, two days after [...]

Sosa Gets Caught…Who is Next?

Sammy Sosa has gotten caught now for corking his bat, leaving early before a game/ season was over, and now for a PED. I don’t understand getting caught, because as a kid I got away ...

Will Sammy Sosa Lawyer Up, Like He Said He Would? Or Just Rat Out Other Players?

Here’s Sammy Sosa, reported PED cheater, less than two weeks ago: “I always played with love and responsibility and I assure you that I will not answer nor listen to rumors. If anything ugly comes up in the future, we will confront it immediately, but with all our strength because I will not allow anybody to [...]

Comment and response

This morning I wrote a post that, among other things, lauded the legal counsel Sammy Sosa appears to have been given in advance of his Congressional testimony in 2005. I said this: [Sosa] said "To be clear, I have never taken illegal performance-enhancing drugs." He said "I have never injected myself or had anyone inject me with anything." He said "I have not broken the laws of...

Father's Day: Darren Baker asks the question...and Dusty has no answers

Happy Father's Day everyone. I've mostly been shoulder shrugging since the story came out that Sammy Sosa was on the positive test list for PED's that the MLB Players Association didn't destroy. To me it was old news. After the "Steroid Era" cloud passes and everyone in it washs off the stink, I wonder what will be the impact on what baseball should consider...

Congress to look into Sosa's testimony

A congressional committee will look into former baseball slugger Sammy Sosa's denial that he used illegal performance-enhancing drugs in light of a report that he tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug in 2003.

Daly: Slamming the door on Sammy's progress

This New York Times report that Sammy Sosa failed a drug test in 2003 is a real stunner, isn't it? It's like finding out that the Hulk has an anger-management problem or that Michael Jackson had his nose done again. Of all the convicts and suspects in baseball's long-running drama, "To Syringe, With Love," Sosa - along with Rafael Palmeiro and a few others - might have required the...

New Sosa steroid talk leaves Baker tongue-tied

CINCINNATI -- Dusty Baker, who once managed alleged steroid users Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa, says he wonders what to tell his 10-year-old son.

The Sawyer Report : In 2009, Bob Ryan Tested Positive For Racism

In the wake of this week’s revelations about Sammy Sosa, the Boston Globe’s Bob Ryan wonders what’s the point of making a fuss (” is it to stage the baseball equivalent of the Nuremberg Trials, bringing to justice all the nefarious miscreants of its recent past?”), suggests this is old news, even if he didn’t [...]

Manny, ARod Shocked to Hear of Sosa's Steroid Use

To most of the sporting world, the news that Sammy Sosa tested postive for performance-enhancing drugs was hardly earth-shattering news. In fact, it was greeted with a collective "Ya think?" But confirmed steroid cheaters Manny Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez both reacted with shock yesterday when the news was relayed. "Oh, man, lemme tell you, I didn't see that one coming at all, dude...

Baseball In The Daytime: June 17 2009

On the day after we discover that Sammy Sosa's stats might not have been on the level, BITD makes the trek to Wrigley anyway. The show must go on.What are you going to say about Sammy? We all knew it. The saddest part to me was how much of a freak he turned himself into. McGwire was never much of a baseball player to begin with, bulking up did nothing to his game other than add to his already

Journalist Who Bravely Uncovered McGwire's (Perfectly Legal, Over-The-Counter) Drug Use Up For HOF Award

In 1998, the AP's Steve Wilstein spotted a bottle of legal supplements in Mark McGwire's locker. A decade of stupidity and Reefer Madness hysteria ensued, the Bill of Rights died a little, and now people think Wilstein belongs in Cooperstown. Wilstein has been nominated for the Hall of Fame's J.G. Taylor Spink Award by the Seattle chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America...

Random Cubs Notes and what I think of Sammy

Ok, it's been far too long and there's a lot on my mind.  Man, do the 2009 Cubs suck.  Yeah, they won today...yippee!  But frankly, I'm more surprised that they scored 6 runs in a single game than I am that they beat the equally execrable White Sox.  This offense is bad.  Based on their offseason moves, I figured the Cubs might shave three or four wins off last season's...

Steroid Era shouldn’t taint memories

The news of a six year old drug test rocked the baseball world yesterday, the question is, why? Yesterday the New York Times reported that Sammy Sosa had tested positive for performance enhancing drugs in 2003, ending years of suspicion about the slugger. The ripple affect was immense as fans and media outlets cried about the [...]
