After the Mets released Duaner Sanchez, it was assumed by many that he would be replaced by one of the many candidates in camp. However, Marty Noble of mets.com gave an interesting answer in his mailbag today that leads me to believe Omar is not done shopping. Minaya indicated Tuesday the club may look at available left-handed relievers now that the release of Sanchez has created a need. My sense of it was that the Mets needed one even before they ended their relationship with Sanchez. And Reyes now is with the Cardinals. With both Joe Beimel and Will Ohman still available, can the timing now be right for Omar Minaya to make a play for one of them? Ohman, 31, was 4-1 with a 3.68 ERA in 58 innings with the Braves last season after spending his first five seasons with the Cubs. He owns a 4.16 career ERA. Ohman has said he prefers to sign with the Phillies but they may be tapped out. He's looking for about $3.5 million a year. Beimel, 31, had a solid season last year after posting...

Beimel Close To Choosing Offer

Free agent reliever Joe Beimel is closing in on an offer, MLB.com is reporting. He is reportedly deciding between the Padres and Athletics, but the Dodgers and Rockies have had interest along the way. Beimel is the top free agent reliever remaining on the market, meaning he will likely receive somewhere between 1-2 million dollars per year.He went 5-1 with a 2.02 ERA in 71 games...

Sanchez Released

The Mets released Duaner Sanchez this morning. The reliever was in trouble since the start of camp. Sanchez faded down the stretch last year when it mattered most. However in the offseason he got a 128% pay raise to avoid arbitration. General manager Omar Minaya said that Sanchez was released now [...]

Mets back in the lefty market ?

The timing of the Duaner Sanchez release is unusual, the Mets had another week before the next installment was due. Wouldn't it have made sense to use that time to see if he came around, especially after the manager and pitching coach went to bat for him publically just the day before. Unless something else is in the works, maybe someone is getting close to signing that lefty...

Parnell turning heads...

Bobby Parnell maybe the real reason Duaner Sanchez was let go, the 24 y/o right hander is listed anywhere from #5 to #9 depending on the prospect list you look at. Last year from Sept. 15th on, he made six major league appearances in which he allowed three runs ( ERA 5.40) in all. In four of those appearances ( 3 innings) he did not allow a hit or run and only gave up one walk. Against...

Roster Notes

Rotoworld reports the Dodgers and Joe Beimel have reached agreement on a one-year contract worth $1.925M. In today's Ken Rosenthal column, Mark Prior could throw off a mound as early as next week, but those of us who are familiar with the Cubs' use of him recognize he's fragile as a Lladro figurine....

Billy's Burden - Sore Forearm

Billy Wagner's not one to make excuses when he blows a save, but he did let everyone know why he struggled last night. The Mets' closer revealed that he has a strain in his left forearm. Wagner originally hurt his forearm last Tuesday against the Marlins, but after a few days' rest he hoped the pain would ease. He felt no pain until warming up last night in the bullpen...

Nationals Sign Tavarez

The Nationals and Julian Tavarez have agreed to a non guaranteed, minor league deal. Tavarez, 35, is 85-75 with a 4.45 ERA over sixteen seasons in both the NL and AL. Tavarez struggled last season with the Red Sox, Brewers, and Braves, going 1-5 with a 5.10 ERA. By adding this depth, the Nationals have more options to restructure their bullpen. If the Nationals had a little more payroll...

Reactions To Duaner’s Departure

As most Mets fans have heard by now, the club has released relief pitcher, Duaner Sanchez. As much as this surprises me, I cannot say that this is all that unexpected. In 2006, Duaner Sanchez was brought over from the Dodgers to set-up for Billy Wagner. In the months prior to his injury, Sanchez was phenomenal and only allowed 16 earned runs in 55 innings. However, things never...

Murphy and Sanchez

It's after midnight and I still have a couple of hours work to do before I hit the sheets, but here's some quick Mets-related thoughts for your pleasure (or displeasure.) When I get really swamped with works, it's often e-mails from readers that keep me up on what's going on with the Mets. I had a couple this evening that brought up two items of which I've already...

Setting the Record Straight

A while back I realized that setting a goal of posting 2 or 3 times a week wasn't going to work for me. I've been pretty busy for the last year or so, and I find that what I don't work to make part of my daily routine doesn't get done very often. Because I still appreciate the outlet that writing this blog provides for me creatively, and the connection I make with...

Villone leading the pack...

It appears that the cutting of Duaner Sanchez will save the Mets approx. 1.5 MM which will more then likely be the salary of the two relievers who will replace him. If Duaner was the pitcher of old Jerry Manuel was leaning towards a six man pen with Duaner and Green picking up most of the middle ...

Could things have gone any worse for Redding....

So when is it no longer too early to worry about someone, earlier this week Duaner Sanchez was let go for his ineffectiveness. Now I'm not saying it's time to start considering cutting Tim Redding but even I'm starting to get worried about him and I put very little credence in early spring training result, while also having very little expectations for the fifth starter...

Circle Of Love - Duaner, Omar, Jerry

Good evening MetsMerizers! I woke up this morning feeling pretty good and the first thing I see on SI.com is an article about how Jerry Manuel and Omar Minaya are at odds over Duaner Sanchez being released. Granted, the article was taken from the NY post so I'm sure it's a bit exaggerated. The Mets got tired of his arm to come around and it just didn't happen. I'...
