Ken Griffey Jr. and the Mariners agreed Wednesday to another one-year contract that will keep the popular slugger in Seattle next year. Baseball's active home run leader, who turns 40 on Nov. 21, will basically get the same, incentive-laden deal with $2 million in base salary he signed to return to Seattle for the 2009 season.

Ken Griffey Jr.'s return for at least one more season with the Seattle Mariners raises an interesting question.

It doesn't look like Ken Griffey Jr. is going to be available today to talk about his return, but I did talk to his agent, Brian Goldberg, who had some interesting insight into negotiations and his client's mindset. Here are some highlights:

Ah....Opening Day. In the city that housed the first professional baseball team, Opening Day is as much a holiday as any. In a city that faces gray winters....Opening Day seems to be the unofficial first day of spring. People are just crawling out of their homes, getting their lawns shaped up, planting flowers, going on walks, cleaning those grills and getting ready for another season...
