PLAYERS: Barry Bonds

From CNN: A federal grand jury indicts Barry Bonds on perjury and obstruction of justice charges, AP and CNN affiliate KTVU report Major League Baseball's all-time home run king Barry Bonds was indicted Thursday on perjury and obstruction justice charges, according to KTVU reporter Rita Williams. The five-count indictment -- four counts of perjury and one of obstruciton of justice -- capped one of the longest federal grand jury investigations in Northern California history -- a proceeding that introduced the sports world to the acronym BALCO (Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative) and led to the downfall of American track and field world and Olympic champions Marion Jones, Kelli White and Tim Montgomery...

  • I Just heard it come across the newswire. So awesome! Karma finally catches up with him.
  • I can't believe it, I really can't. More dominos will follow for sure. Weird, there is a chance that in 1 year, Marion Jones is gone, O.J. Simpson is behind bars, and Barry Bonds is disgraced and behind bars.
  • Will Bobblehead Barry see a jail cell? I thought they would get him on tax evasion, although they still might, I didn't think this would happen.
  • It is about damn time!
  • it would have been funny if the feds had nabbed him as he was rounding third on homer 756. oh well, poor barry got used used used by the MLB
  • No celebrations here.
  • I know. it's like you do something wrong. Tumbs down for Barry.
  • yeah, karma sure can be biotch.
  • I have this weird feeling he beats this but not the tax evasion. If it took them so long to get an indictment....they may have a problem with real tangible evidence come trial. I still think the tax evasion is an easy one to nail him on...but who knows...stranger things have happened.
  • Well, my sister works for the Feds, and this much is for certain. They crossed their "t's" and dotted their "i's", so there is preponderance of evidence; however, with the right legal representation anyone could get off.

I don't see Bonds pulling a Vick -- I see him fighting tooth and nail to the very end. It depends on what evidence is that will determine whether I think he gets off.

If Anderson for some reason ratted him out, he's up the creek.
  • We kinda all saw this coming. It was going to come now or later. I mean he lied. Every body lies but Barry, WOW. I very highly doubt he is ever going to com to the MLB ever again. It is like Michael Vick. You do something wrong you're out. It's pretty obvious. BIG THUMBS DOWN!!!
  • Peter Gammons was on ManGirl and Meatball this morning and said the feds had a postive steroid test on Barry and if that was true he didn't think Bonds would make it into the Hall. Now Gammons might just be talking sh-- or he might have something.
  • MLB and the media are sacrificing Barry Bonds in order to try to put and "end" to the steroid era of baseball. They've been on a man hunt for a scapegoat and finally Anderson turned dime, and Barry will pay the price. I hope he fights this to the end, and stays out of prison. There's no reason we should be placing baseball immortality behind bars. I hope Bud Selig, the media and the rest of the country realize that this will not put an end to steroid use in baseball. Steroids are as much a part of baseball, albeit an unseen one, as sliding into second. It happens all the time, but no one gives it too much attention.
  • My personal belief is everyone was doing it (steroids/PED's) from top to bottom, and the three-ring circus' business is about to pick up. The feds got their man, and they are going to make an example out of him. He allegedly lied to the feds, and pissed on their shows.

The case now isn't about Bonds' perjury, it's about how he's ruined American sports and the sanctity of a game.

Why the fuss isn't raised about football - I have no idea.

All the moralists, talking heads, experts, etc., are coming out; however, cheating is rampant in every segment of society and people seem to be selective as to what they want to fight about and turn a blind eye to.

Sheffield, Giambi, and all the guys caught are being given a pass â€" thus, Bonds has sinned & is in a word of trouble not because he did drugs, but because he was arrogant, ornery and pissed off a large segment of the sporting public.

Sports is like pro wrestling now â€" just entertainent & the world is really messed up. We get it -- it's kind of unsettling to hear all the self-righteousness being exponded now.

    Enjoy it for what is.
  • I knew this was going to happen when Bud was playing all his games. I knew that he told Hank to stay away from all of the hype. This was a long time coming.

I am looking forward to a day when there is no steroid use in baseball. That day will never come, but I am looking forward to it. :-)
  • Sure, I agree. Bud may not have put anything in him, but he, his cronies, the owners and executives were enablers and turned a blind eye to it all. Only after Jose Canseco blew the lid off the can and MLB was made a fool of in front of Congress -- only did MLB care.

MLB will only get serious about testing when they adopt Olympic style testing. Yeah, MLB may never be clean; however, we'll know they are all about the fight rather than lip service.

MAYOR STEELERSTAHL MEETS SNOOP DOGG

Undoubtedly the best thing I've come across in the past 24 hours, other than the new limited edition Pringles Onion Blossom chips, was this photo of Mayor Steelerstahl with Snoop Dogg taken sometime during the Super Bowl festivities and discovered by Sportsocracy. Some might question the wisdom of a major city's Mayor posing for a picture with a man who boasts an extensive...

I hope Sugar Shane Mosley was for real

Mosley's stock is arguably at an all-time high, and if there were any doubts about his standing amongst the all-time greats, his knockout of Antonio Margarito erased them all. I felt there was something fishy back in the early part of the decade when Barry Bonds was setting personal and all-time homerun records despite being in his late 30's.I hope that isn't the case...

Barry Bonds set to add new lawyer to legal team

Barry Bonds plans to add an attorney to his legal team before his federal court appearance next week, the slugger's longtime business affairs lawyer said Thursday. Michael Rains has represented Bonds since the home run king first was subpoenaed in 2003...

Why no one cares about Sammy Sosa

Sammy Sosa hit Home Run #599 on Friday Night and no one seems to care. Some might say it's because Barry Bonds is overshadowing him, but Sosa really did it to himself.

More on the 'Plaxident'

....Point A happens to be the offices of the National Football League. Point B is where Plaxico shot himself in the thigh. It's a little hard to see, but I think you can get the idea of the insane proximity between the club and the NFL's offices. Walking, this is a distance of .1 mile, which is somewhere around 500 or 600 feet. Plax is lucky that Goodell wasn't in...

Barry Bonds

Courtesy of ESPN (Gene Wojciechowski):Barry Bonds has played his last game, worn his last major league uniform, defied the truth for the last time. His baseball career came to a wrenching, unfulfilled, but fitting end the exact moment he was indicted on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice T...

Clemens' legacy is shot down the drain

With the revelation that Roger Clemens has been implicated in the Mitchell Report, his Hall of Fame legacy is pretty much shot down the tubes. You have to put Clemens right there with cheating slime like Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire. If you can't put McGwire or Bonds in the Hall of Fame, you can't put Clemens there, either.

Mike Milbury Isn't Shy About Sharing His Opinions Either

What is it with the Mikes today, or yesterday for that matter? First Mike Patrick said he wanted to see Barry Bonds in prison stripes, and now NESN/NBC/CBC's Mike Milbury is calling players "dicks" on live television? Milbury used to be the GM of the Islanders, and drafted a player by the name of Tim Connolly in 1999, but then traded the Center onto the Sabres just...

Blogrolling Needs A New Area

Won't you please save a word today? Me, I'm going with boreism, or possibly namelings to describe the dozens of Ramerizi in MLB.NY Yankees Rumors.com has dozens of photos of the new yard, which looks really big and very expensive -- shocking, I am sure. His caption for the photo above ("It’s like an all Yankees Cooperstown") either shows that he's never actually...

Performance Enhancing Substances in NASCAR?

Apparently it's news that Barry Bonds' body is different than 15 years ago when he was a Pirate. One of my friends at work and I were discussing Bonds and went off on a tangent about steroids in NASCAR. What if Mark Martin injected HGH into his right foot? Maybe Chad Knaus' baldness is due to heavy u...

Random Thoughts on a Tuesday Afternoon

Sociopaths in Baseball At this point I have no choice but to assume that Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens are sociopaths. Now, I know that’s a somewhat bold statement to make, but let’s consider how these two men have acted over the past months and years. First of all, it’s...

Winning Is The Only Thing That Really Matters.

The past week has to go down as one of the wackiest in recent sports history. * Barry Bonds was finally indicted on perjury and obstruction charges relating to allegedly lying about his use of steroids. * Alex Rodriguez is back with the New York Yankees, despite the Yankees' insistence that they were done with him after he opted out of his contract...
