The two biggest stories in Pirate-land today had nothing to do with our sport of choice, baseball. I'm not big on the touchy-feely stuff, but today the Pirates got emotional and put their lives in perspective, and we should do the same.---First, the good news. Doug Mientkiewicz, of course, left the team briefly as his wife, Jodi, underwent heart surgery. She's OK and had a pacemaker installed, and has returned to her Pittsburgh home. Bucco fans everywhere were praying for the Mientkiewicz's, as evidenced [here], where 98 (and counting) fans showed their support via blog comment. Great to hear.---On a more somber note, the 18-year-old who stopped by to hang out with the Pirates in June, John Challis (of Freedom) passed away, ending his battle with cancer. John was inspirational to people all over the place, but when he met with the Bucs before a Yankee game in June, he told them to not worry about stats, but to have fun. He also said "Life's not about how many breaths you take. It's ...

Pettitte No Longer Wants To Pitch To I-Rod

In what appears to have been a quiet story but definitely an interesting one, Andy Pettitte has asked that Jose Molina become his personal catcher. According to the New York Journal News, Pettitte asked to no longer throw to catcher Ivan Rodriquez after his miserable outing on July 31st against the Anaheim Angels. On that night, Pettitte just never looked comfortable...

Hot Stove Q&A with Brett Gardner

For the past three seasons Melky Cabrera has been the up and coming Yankee center fielder. The team believed in him so much they called him up on the anniversary of the day that Bernie Williams was first called to the Bronx. But a season full of disappointments has found Melky in Scranton and in his place is the speedy 24-year-old Brett Gardner. In his first cup of coffee...

Matsui coming back for Yankees

Hideki Matsui is expected back for the Yankees as early as Tuesday, when the Bombers open a series with the Blue Jays. Joe Girardi said he expects Godzilla, whose been on the DL with inflammation in his knee since June 27, to play DH for the rest of the season to decrease the risk of reinjuring the outfielder's balky knee. Sunday's offensive explosion aside, the Yankees...

Former Yankee arrested post restaurant mayhem!

BREAKING NEWS - Earlier this morning, former Yankees pitcher, Hideki Irabu (yes, he of the "Fat Toad" claim to fame) was arrested in Osaka for being drunk and disorderly.

I'm Crossing The Border Eh

Just an FYI that I'll be taking off the next few days from blogging while I attend the Yanks/Jays series up in Toronto. I might pop in here and there, but that's doubtful. While I'm gone, I'd suggest visiting any of the various Yankees blogs over on the leff sidebar. They're all good.I'll

Alex Rodriguez dates women all across the east coast

Alex Rodriguez is really enjoying the single life. Page Six reports that the new bachelor was out with a beautiful blond in Miami last Wednesday. "A-Rod stepped out with a mystery blonde last Wednesday night, starting with a cozy dinner at Dan Marino's in South Beach? As they got up to leave around 1 a.m., the duo seemed surprised to be greeted by a photographer's flash...

GameDay #126 at Cardinals

Pirates (56-69) at Cardinals (70-57)8:15--Busch Stadium, St. LouisIan Snell (4-10, 5.91) vs. Braden Looper (11-9, 4.07)[Preview]----------Ian Snell has been mediocre in three of his last four starts. For him, that is a major improvement. Unfortunately, mediocre doesn't seem to be enough for the Bucco offense these days, unless the Met bullpen is involved.-Snell has had a tendency...

The Water Cooler Chronicles, Part I

When I learned to read, roughly two decades ago, the general columnists in Pittsburgh's major papers were Ron Cook, Gene Collier and Bob Smizik. Today, open to the sports page of the Pittsburgh's major newspaper, the Post-Gazette, and you'll find that the three major general columnists are Ron Cook, Gene Collier and Bob Smizik. I [...]

GameDay #127 at Cardinals

Pirates (57-69) at Cardinals (70-58)8:15--Busch Stadium, St. LouisJason Davis (1-2, 1.80) vs. Todd Wellemeyer (10-4, 3.79)[Preview]---------Doesn't it seem like this is the millionth time we've faced Wellemeyer this year? OK, it's 4, and he's 2-0. Meanwhile, Jason Davis has been a ton better than Yoslan Herrera, but it's not resulting in wins. The Bucs haven't won a game he started...

It's Now or Never Yankees.. Wake up!

As the clock struck twelve on July 31, 2008, the New York Yankees were looked upon as the team who had the most success at the trade deadline. With steals of Xavier Nady to the acquisition of future hall-of-fame catcher Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez, confidence spread throughout the clubhouse, organization, and fanbase. After a hot streak after the All-Star break that lingered...

Yankees To Start Pavano Or Hughes Sat.

While the Yankees aren't technically eliminated from the playoffs yet, they are going to need more starting pitching in order to hang on. As the rotation stands right now they've got Mike Mussina, Andy Pettitte, Sidney Ponson, Darrell Rasner, and one yet to be named. The fifth starter won't be needed until Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles. ...

Steve Pearce--Met Killer

Two straight Monday afternoon games against the Mets. Two deficits. Two game winning hits by Steve Pearce.---Pearce has been very unimpressive since his callup, but this makes two weeks in a row that he did in the Mets in the Pirates' final at-bat.-Paul Maholm was shaky early and gave up a run in the first (shocking, I know), but limited the damage and allowed just one more run in...

Next!

Let's be frank--Jason Davis pitched himself out of the rotation tonight. He was absoultely terrible. That's the bad news. The good news is--unlike a month or so ago when it was nearly impossible to pitch one's self out of the Pirates rotation--now a guy who came in with a 1.80 ERA is likely gone (since Gorzo and Ohlendorf are both throwing well in Triple-A). Shows you what Huntington...
