Found July 26, 2008 on Hot Stove New York: Yardbarker Blogger Network
Only a few hours after a published report in the Daily News indicated that the Mets had targeted Casey Blake, Raul Ibanez, and Jason Bay in their search for a corner outfield bat, you can scratch one of those names off the list. The Los Angeles Dodgers have acqired Blake from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for two prospects, catcher Carlos Santana and RHP Jon Meloan. Blake, a free agent at the end of the year, started off slowly this season, but has rebounded nicely, compiling a .289 average with 11 HR and 58 RBI. Of all the players on the market, Blake was the one that this blogger most coveted. Sure, an Xavier Nady reunion would have been nice, and it will sting to see the X-Man in pinstripes, but one had to figure that the Pirates would be asking for an arm and a leg for either of Nady or Bay, leaving Blake and Ibanez as two competent and affordable options. Blake's versatility and right-handed bat would have been a far better fit in the Mets lineup than the lefty Ibanez. Now, it appears it's Ibanez or bust. It's worth noting that Mets uber-prospect Fernando Martinez is injured again, leaving Binghamton's doubleheader on Thursday after being bothered by the same right hamstring that cost him five weeks earlier this season. At this point, the kid seems officially injury-prone. If Minaya was ever tempted to deal Martinez for someone like Jason Bay, I would think now would be the time. Bay, 29, is currently batting .289 with 22 homers, 61 RBI, and a .383 OBP. His best season came in 2006 when he belted 25 homers and drove in 109 runs.

Report: Indians close to trading Blake to Dodgers

The Cleveland Indians have reportedly traded Casey Blake to the Los Angeles Dodgers for catcher Carlos Santana and pitcher Jon Meloan.

Fine, We Admit It.

I've been reluctant to admit that Kevin Youkilis is more than a poor man's Casey Blake for most of his career. Maybe it's because the boys at the World Wide Leader were always telling us how great he is. Maybe it's because he doesn't look the part of an everyday major leaguer. Maybe it's because the Red Sox shuffle him around from 3rd to 1st to the outfield...

Mets Look Beyond Nady for Outfield Help

In the wake of last night's deal sending Pirates Xavier Nady to the Yankees, the Mets, who thought his price tag was too high anyway, are now looking for corner outfield help at Indians' Casy Blake, Seattle's Raul Ibanz and Pirates' Jason Bay, if he is still available after the Nady deal. This report comes from the New York Daily News.

South Korean Military Awaiting Choo's Arrival?

Okay, get ready to mark this one down in the "are you kidding me?" column. It wasn't all that long ago that we were the GM for Shin-Soo Choo, where more than 80 percent(!) of you said to either let him ride, or give him a contract extension. He's since started hitting the ball very well; getting on base and driving in runs. But with that said, would this force...

Around The Web: Casey Blake Trade Reaction

Around The Web: Casey Blake Trade Reaction I tried to find as much analysis as I could and bundle them all into one post. Some of the quotes are really long because you wouldn't be able to read them without paying (ESPN Insider/Baseball Prospectus). Both contributors to Mike Scioscia's Tragic Illness seem to hate the trade. I think that's pretty obvious from...

Top Mets Dominican Prospects

Here is a recent Top 10 Dominican Prospects feature where I ranked the Mets' Fernando Martinez number two and Jefry Marte number eight. 2. Fernando Martinez OF (Mets) - No one questions Fernando's bat. It is his ability to stay healthy that is the big impediment for him to have success in the major leagues. He's had three seasons in the minor leagues and he has yet...

Johan Santana Forced the Trade

Filed under: Minnesota, Twins, MLB Gossip, MLB TransactionsFellow FanHouse blogger Josh Alper recently posed the question of how Twins GM Bill Smith could trade Johan Santana to the Mets without getting Fernando Martinez in return. It's a very good question, and one I was asking myself when I found...

Girardi Blunders by tabbing Nady over Swisher

Joe Girardi made a major blunder yesterday when he announced that Xavier Nady will get the nod as the Yanks’ starting right-fielder. Joe told reporters: “If we were to break today, Nady would be my right fielder,” Girardi said. “Nady did a lot of good things last year, so he had the upper hand going in.” Every way [...]

Dodgers Trade Carlos Santana And Jon Meloan For Casey Blake

When I posted the Prospect Profile of Carlos Santana earlier this morning, I honestly had no idea that the Dodgers would trade him just hours later in a deal for Casey Blake, but that's exactly what happened. "The Indians would get minor-league catcher Carlos Santana, right-handed pitcher Jon Meloan and cash in return." This may not seem like a big deal because...

X-Man Returneth To Shea

Tonight's Mets-Pirates game marks the return of Xavier Nady, who will make his first appearance at Shea Stadium since the Mets made the deadline deal that sent him to Pittsburgh last year in exchange for relief pitcher Roberto Hernandez and starter Oliver Perez. The deal has worked out well for the Me...

Nady to start in Right Field

Yankees manager Joe  Girardi said this morning that if the season started tomorrow, Xavier Nady would be his right fielder over Nick Swisher based on what he did last season. Nady had a Career year  last season and Swisher had a career worst year. I would expect that both players will have a more typical to [...]

Twins Shopping for Third Baseman

The Twins are serious about upgrading at third base and are working at a deal for Seattle's Adrian Beltre. They have also spoken with the Rangers about Hank Blalock and the Indians about Casey Blake.

Yankees Demote Melky | Release Sexson

From being protected from a blockbuster trade to being demoted in the middle of August Melky Cabrera has taken quite a step back this season. The Yankees demoted the struggling 24-year-old center fielder today and in his place called up Brett Gardner who will likely take his place as a starter. Cabrera made Yankee general manager Brian Cashman look smart early this season when...

Neyer: Swisher Should Start

Earlier today it was reported and mentioned in my game thread, that Joe Girardi said that if the season started tomorrow Xavier Nady would be starting. Rob Neyer of ESPN does not think Girardi is making the correct decision.Xavier Nady's been around for a while and is exceptionally easy to project. Given regular duties in the middle of a good lineup, he'll hit 25 homers and...
