Found August 08, 2008 on Lansdowne 9:
If you haven't heard the recent news by now, the Red Sox claimed Brian Giles off waivers yesterday and have 48 hours to work out a possible trade to bring the veteran outfielder to Boston. The real question we have to ask ourselves is, why? Rumor has it that Theo placed in the claim simply to deny the Angles or Rays a shot at picking up the 37-year-old. In that case, this ordeal indeed makes sense, but lets play the role of Terry Francona and say Brian Giles were to agree to come to Boston. Defensively, the Red Sox are set in the outfield. Coco Crisp and Jacoby Ellsbury's defense in the center field has been nothing short of superb. Jason Bay seems to have a knack for playing balls off the wall, sort of like the Sox' old left-fielder from Washington Heights. JD Drew certainly isn't a liability as your starting right fielder. He could be a quality bat off the bench, but do you think Brian Giles would be alright with that? Beyond that, if we take a gla...

Red Bull gives you wiiings

Coco Crisp was seen drinking it when he made one of his many insanely diving catches in a Red Sox uniform. Tons of athletes are sponsored or endorse it. But schools in Great Britain have banned it from school grounds because "some children's conduct changed after consuming the drink."Wooow, ...

Apparently Winning Is Not Too High on Brian Giles' Agenda

The waivers system is a complicated process in baseball that allows players to be traded even after the trade deadline has passed. Several players are placed on waivers, as it allows many teams the chance to rid themselves of a bad contract. Only problem is often times nobody's interested in claiming a weak-hitting [...]

Top 5 Goggled Athletes

For the past couple nights Kevin Youkilis has donned a sweet pair of goggles to help cover that nasty swollen eye after being hit with a throw from Mike Lowell. That thing looked more damaged than Brett Myers' girlfriend in the middle of the Boston streets. Let's hope Youk can make a full recovery and beat this swollen eye. If not, at least we can check out some really cool...

Rocco Baldelli to sign with Red Sox

I'm not too thrilled with this signing but what can you expect from a 4th outfielder/bench player? The Red Sox are reportedly seconds from signing Rocco Baldelli to be a back-up outfielder.Baldelli, the 6th overall pick in 2000, was a VERY highly touted prospect at one time. That time period just happened to be pre-moneyball, which was when people thought it was ok to have a .320...

Ortiz and Bay return to Red Sox camp

Jason Bay (Canada) and David Ortiz (Dominican Republic) have both returned to Red Sox spring training camp after experiencing early exits from the WBC. Personally I was kind of shocked to see both teams get booted so early but I guess that doesn’t really matter to me. It does however matter to Pedroia, [...]

Papelbon: Manny Was A Cancer

From the AP: Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon compared former teammate Manny Ramirez to cancer, saying Boston made the right decision when it traded the slugging left fielder to the Los Angeles Dodgers last summer. "He was on a different train! And you saw what happened with that. We got rid of him, and we moved on without him," Papelbon was quoted in the April issue...

Mussina Could Miss Chance At 20

Here at Hot Stove we have been paying much attention to Mike Mussina these past few weeks as the aging starter gets closer to winning 20 games for the first time in his career. He picked up win number 19 in his last start against the Blue Jays and should have a chance to get number 20 against the Red Sox on the final day of the season. The only problem is that Mussina might not...

Ugly Clooney

BY Lucas Pearson , October 15th, 2007 As the 2006 season approached, I was very excited about the addition of Josh Beckett to the Boston rotation. As hard as it was to say goodbye to Hanley Ramirez, who was sure to be a star, it was worth it to obtain a young pitcher that could immediately become the ace of the staff. There was also a lot of talk about the albatross that...

Blessed are the optionless; Marte, Breslow make bid for Tribe's final roster spots

Andy MartEE is seeking the final spot among the position players on the Tribe's roster. With the Tribe tabbing Jorge Julio for a spot in the pen and sending Scott Elarton to Buffalo today, newly arrived lefty reliever Craig Breslow is in a similar situation out in the pen - battling Tom Mastny for the last musical chair out there. Both MartEE and Breslow are out of options...

Jeter Getting Awfully Chummy With The Enemy

From Mike Puma:Love is in the air between the Yankees and Red Sox. Maybe "love" is a little strong, but Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis don't mind saying they have formed a bond with Derek Jeter as members of Team USA for the World Baseball Classic. You only need to spend a few minutes ...
