Surviving Grady:
It'll be tough, since the guy's certainly got a lot of incentive going into tonight's game. First, there's that whole Cy Young thing, not to mention his drive to set the Royals' single-season strike out record. Then there's the chance to play spoiler, which has more or less been Kansas City's role since late June. He also no doubt wants to prove himself "all good" after taking a line drive off the arm in his last start against Detroit. On the flip side, Greinke has never beaten us. And I like to think that after last night's embarrassment, our boys would like to return the favor by pummeling the ace of the Kansas City staff. Or at least by wedgie-ing Manny Delcarmen within an inch of his life. Whatever feels better, I guess. All I know is, the preview photos at mlb.com aren't doing either of tonight's starters any favors.

Manny Delcarmen? You SUCK!
Manny Delcarmen BLOWS. He cannot pitch his way out of a paper bag which is wet & open. WHY does he remind me of the TOTALLY-USELESS ARMANDO BENITEZ? He couldn't find the Pope in Vatican City, let alone find home plate. ...
"Manny Delcarmen Now Warming Up" Has Surpassed "Hot Man-On-Man Action" as the Phrase I Enjoy Hearing Least
I tweeted this last night and, having thought about it for a while, I have to say I still feel the same today. I'm not quite sure what's happened to the pride of West Roxbury High, but from here on out, I'd relegate him to mop-up duty and give Ramon Ramirez the nod when the call goes out during the playoffs. Yeah, you're damn right Monday's game is still bothering...
Should Manny Delcarmen make the playoff roster?
Back in 2006, a game thread was posted at Fire Brand (link doesn't work, sorry) in which Julian Tavarez gave up a game-winning grand slam to Jason Kubel. Former Fire Brander Andrew Lipsett wanted Delcarmen in the game; I defended Taveras. Lipsett's point:MDC hasn't proven he can because he hasn't gotten the chance to. Tavarez hasn't proven he can handle it because...
Change would be a relief for Delcarmen
There was a message Terry Francona wanted out there about Manny Delcarmen , the struggling reliever who has watched his ERA rise steadily, month by month. As the manager said in his pregame meeting yesterday, “We’re not going to give up on him.
A Putrid Loss to a Putrid Team on a Putrid Night
I'm not going to write much about this horrible loss by the Red Sox tonight. (But I did feel like doing what the pictured gorilla is doing after the bottom of the sixth ended.)They walked 11 batters tonight, the most since August 2006. And they let a golden opportunity to make up ground in the AL East go right down the toilet. They squandered a six-run lead on a rainy night to...
Injuries, Blessings, and Manny Not Being Manny
A Pair of Injuries
On Monday, Junichi Tazawa was placed on the 60-day disabled list due to what has been described as a mild groin strain. While the groin gives the Sox a reason through which to DL Tazawa, the pitcher had reportedly reached his innings limit, according to the Red Sox official web site. The move also helps make room for Chris Woodward. The infielder will fill in...
Crash
Game 149 - Red SoxRoyals 12, Red Sox 9Record: 89-50Yeah, all that stuff I said about catching the Yankees? The lesson, as always...wait a minute. That lesson's wrong. This one's not my fault. The Sox had 6-0 and 8-2 leads on the Royals on a night the Yankees lost, and you want to blame this one on me? Oh, hell no.Let's put blame where blame is due, friends. And blame...
This is no time for experiments Terry Francona
Last night was a perfect example of "shoulda, coulda, woulda" for the Boston Red Sox.The Red Sox had a commanding lead, blew it, couldn't rally, blew it some more, and eventually lost to the Kansas City Royals. The New York Yankees bowed to the Los Angeles Angels and the Texas Rangers beat the Oakland Athletics, which means the Sox could have gained a game in the American...
