The Cubs signed lefty Casey Fossum and put him in Iowa. I don't know the specifics of the deal, but it seems like a wise move, given Neal Cotts' season-ending surgery. If Fossum is called-up by the Cubs, it will be his sixth major league uniform, starting with Boston, a year in Arizona, three in Tampa and then 2008 with the Tigers. Fossum started 2009 as a Met, but got the boot after three appearances. The Yankees scooped him up in May, stuck him in Scranton (per MLBTR). Fossum opted out of his contract with the Yankees, so he clearly feels like he'll get a better shot in Chicago.Fossum, originally from New Jersey (have to mention the Garden State), is now 31 and hasn't made a start in the major leagues since May 29, 2007, but he has worked in the rotation for Scranton and Buffalo in the International League, as he has throughout his minor league career. We'll see what he does in Iowa, but we have a good pile of pitches in PITCHf/x for Fossum, although he's a l...

Is it time to CASH-IN on Fernando Martinez?

The Mets have a opportunity to make some personnel moves (trade) while they are in striking distance and only 1 game out..... But, the Mets seem to think that they will have a healthy Beltran , Delgado, Reyes, and maybe Putz after the All-Star break...They also have a chance to get Billy Wagner back, who seems to be making head way. This maybe the reason we have not seen any moves...

Oliver Perez Set To Return On Wednesday

According to espn.com,  Oliver Perez is set to return to the Mets to make a start on Wednesday night against the Dodgers at Citi Field.  Although he claims to be healthy, his latest effort on the mound seems to suggest that not much has changed since we last saw him in New York.  He continues [...]

Mets are Mental Midgets

Listen. Every so often a starting pitcher is going to go out there and simply not have it. That was indeed the case with Livan Hernandez last night. His line of 3 IP, 10H, 7R was god awful and by far the worst performance he has put forth since joining the Mets. The guy has [...]

We May Stay Forever Numb

After a game like Saturday's, in which the Mets fell behind and settled in comfortably from there, it felt fair if they ever planned to mount a comeback again. Then I remembered it was barely 48 hours ago that they indeed came from five runs behind to eventually won a ballgame. They do apparently maintain a pulse for occasional use no matter how intently they try to hide it....

There’s An East Coast Baseball Club That Keeps Running Itself Out Of Innings

Besides the New York Mets, that is. Razor Shines has not been moonlighting as 3rd Base Coach for the Baltimore Orioles, but you’d think otherwise if you’ve witnessed what the Sun’s Roch Kubatko calls “fundamental lapses” that threaten to be “the undoing” of manager Dave Trembley. GM Andy MacPhail isn’t throwing down the gauntlet, but he [...]

Agnostic at Best

I was supposed to be home in time for the game. Instead, the flight back from Boston was delayed by the Northeast's daily apparently rain showers. The plane didn't take off until 6:30 or so, and it was after 7:30 when I was able to get MLB At Bat up and running. I navigated my way to the audio with my fingers over the screen, not wanting to see the score. Heard unfamiliar...

CUBS IN BRIEF: Pitch's up, Rich's down: 'It was embarrassing':

Rich Harden's last start Monday at Pittsburgh might have been his best of the season. His start Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers was his worst.

Game 2 Preview: Mets @ Phils

After a convincing 7-2 Phillies win last night, the Mets send Fernando Nieve to the hill this afternoon to take on Jamie Moyer. Nieve is sporting an impressive stat line (3-1, 2.25 ERA), and his emergence has helped to stabilize the Mets rotation.  However, he is coming off his worst start of  his young career, and [...]
