For fans of most other franchises, a second place finish doesn't portend to much. But we're Cub fans, and even if there wasn't the Wild Card device, we'd be giddy with excitement. Compound that with only the third post-season appearance in nearly 55 years, and the truth is that we had very high hopes for the upcoming 1999 season.
Sammy Sosa had just completed a 66 homer, 158 RBI season. Even if his production went down, say, 20% - we're still talking 50 bombs and 130 RBI! We'd take that! Other returning members of the potent offense include Oh! Henry Rodriguez in left, the OneDog, Lance Johnson, in center and batting leadoff, Mark Grace of course at first, the double play combo of Mickey Morandini and Jeff Blauser, and the Rejuvenation miracle of 1998, 40-year-old Gary Gaetti, at third. Gaetti, the former Cardinal, was key down the stretch the previous year with clutch home runs and throwing himself around with wild abandon in the hot corner. How's THAT for a pile of sp...

Randy Wells For Rookie Of The Year
Harry Pavlidis takes a look at Wells in ways few others could.
Wells got off to a fast start, pitching at least through the fifth inning without giving up more than three runs in each of his first six starts. I found his plight quite interesting. After those six starts, Wells was among an elite group of pitchers—Bill Laskey, Cal Eldred and Chuck Smith—who suffered from a...
Cubs 4-2 Reds: Ladies And Gentlemen, Your 2009 NLROY
Randy Wells, simply put, is a ******* meast. Wells tossed 7.1 innings, scattering 6 hits, and allowing just 1 ER and 2 BB, while K’ing 5. He was, as he has been for all but 3 of his 12 starts, very sharp, as was the Cub defense behind him.
The offense looked primed to have another explosion, plating 3 runs in the top of the 2nd via a long Mike Fontenot HR (which pencil...
Maybe Tom Gorzelanny Just Needed Change of Scenery?
by Matt SnyderFiled under: MLB Injury Report, MLB Locking Your Lineup, MLB Value MachinePoppin' out the box scores and right into your cubicle, the Roto Rush is your double espresso shot of fantasy baseball advice every weekday.
In 2005, Tom Gorzelanny pitched in the majors for the first time. He was just 22. Two years later, he went 14-10 with a 3.88 ERA -- logging more than 200...
Piniella: Tom, thanks
Tom Gorzelanny may have grown up a Sox fan on the South Side, but he won over many Cubs fans with his impressive debut for the North Siders. ''You can't pitch any better than he pitched -- put it that way,'' manager Lou Piniella said after the Marist High School grad took a two-hit shutout into the eighth inning on the way to a 6-3 victory Tuesday over the Reds at Great American Ball Park.
GameCast: August 4th at Cincinnati
Tom Gorzelanny (3-1, 5.19 ERA) vs. Johnny Cueto (8-8, 4.06 ERA)Story-linesI have mixed feelings about this game - and the rest of the Cubs games against the Reds. On one hand, for two reasons I'm hoping the Reds get crushed. First, Cincinnati is on a downward spiral and the Cubs need to take advantage of their collapsing opponent. Second, I don't hate the Reds and if the Cubs...
Just Kidding! Chicago Cubs Waive BJ Ryan
Where's Borat when you want to proclaim, "Not so much"?
After a couple weeks of getting a tan in Arizona on the Cubs' payroll, BJ Ryan is yet again unemployed.
The one-time closer of the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays was waived in July by the Jays when his arm didn't produce what his salary demanded from the left-hander, and he got a shot to join the Cubs with...
Gorzelanny stars in Cubs' 6-3 win over Reds
Left-hander Tom Gorzelanny turned his first appearance for the Cubs into his best of the season, allowing only three hits and driving in a run Tuesday night for a 6-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds that kept Chicago in first place for another day.

Shaky bullpen gets a rest
CINCINNATI -- One immediate byproduct of Tom Gorzelanny's deep-start debut for the Cubs on Tuesday night was a small reprieve for a heavily used bullpen.
Are the Phillies slipping into another funk?
The Phillies lost to the Rockies last night 8-3 in another of Jamie Moyer’s not-so-good starts. He’d been pitching better as of late but this is another disappointing effort. 6 runs over 5 innings is just not going to get it done. He pitches in front of a great offense but even they can’t score [...]
