Found December 15, 2008 on Eli's MLB Rumors:
According to cubs.com, the Cubs are closing in on free agent outfielder Joey Gathright. Gathright, who hit .254 in 105 games for the Royals last season, played for Piniella in Tampa and would give the Cubs a speedy, versatile bench player. Gathright has shown flashes of success, and getting the 27-year old back with his first manager could have a huge impact.
However, bringing in Gathright does not bode well for Felix Pie, a similar type player with more upside. The Cubs reportedly have a very high asking price for Pie, and they know by putting him back in Triple-A, where he has already proven himself, would give them no leverage in trade negotiations down the road.

Ripping Joey Gathright

I've been thinking of Joey Gathright as a Doug Dascenzo For The New Century, but Geoff Young, author of the Padres blog Ducksnorts and in this case writing for Baseball Digest Daily, paints an even uglier picture. Enjoy Geoff's post for yourself. All I'll quote here is this: ...what Gathright did in 2008 has been accomplished a mere 15 times since 1901.

Is the Car Jumper a Cub?

This is far from being confirmed, but I have found several links saying the recently non-tendered KC Royal, Joey Gathright will be finding his way to the Cubs roster. Apparently a report on WSCR-AM mentioned that he's been signed (around 6pm Monday evening). Carrie Muskat then posted this odd mention of Gathright at Cubs.com. Noting that the 27 year old speedy, no power, lefty...

Back to Work after the Winter Meetings

There are only 15 days remaining in the year and Jim Hendry has quite a bit of work to do. The Cubs GM is still looking for a left-handed bat for the middle of the lineup, maybe a little speed at the top of the lineup....but a comment from Sandy Alderson late Monday could have spelled the end ...

Never Escape

Proving that MLB will suck you dry in this world and the next, and continuing FTT's theme of finding the perfect holiday gift, consider the recent rise of MLB themed coffins and urns. Sure, you're paying 20% more than the non-logo model to intern your loved one in the last and most symbolic act ...

Another reason?

Click on the link below to see another video of Joey Gathright. Maybe the Cubs are 0-6 in the 2 years in the playoffs because they don't have a freak show player off the bench. That's definitely not it, but who knows.Baseball High JumpProfessional baseball player Joey Gathright jumps over the ...

Why did the Cubs sign Joey Gathright?

If for no other reason, it was to impress the team on road trips and boost morale by doing things like this off the field:

More Cubs Expected to Participate in the WBC

Back in November news began surfacing on which Cubs were expected to participate in the second World Baseball Classic scheduled for March 5th through March 23rd. Carlos Marmol and Alfonso Soriano had signed on at the time to play for the Dominican Team led by Stan Javier. Carlos Zambrano, accordi... ...

From the Wire....Cubs Sign Joey Gathright

According to a report from Cubs.com, Joey Gathright signed a 1-year deal with the Cubs on Tuesday morning. Gathright was non-tendered last week by the Kansas City Royals and played for Lou Piniella in Tampa. The 1-year deal is a Major League contract and he is expected to compete for a spot on ...

Leading Off Is Hard To Do

Reportedly the Cubs would like to add a little speed and athleticism to their lineup this winter but of late has focused on adding a left-handed bat to the middle of the lineup....and some former Cy Young award winner that pitches on the Left Coast.Milton Bradley could be the newest Cub around ...

Felix Pie is Really Not a Cub For Much Longer

In an updated piece on the Joey Gathright deal, MLB.com provides this little nugget:Cubs general manager Jim Hendry...looked at players like Gathright during the Rule 5 Draft last week. So, Hendry was actually looking to the Rule 5 Draft to fill this slot? My, how far Felix Pie has fallen. ...

Building the Cleveland Pen - Exercise in Futility?

Kerry Wood joined the Cleveland bullpen this weekend, and along with Joe Smith and the holdovers from last year, it would seem that GM Mark Shapiro has built himself a solid pen. Except that many a solid-looking pen has fallen apart at the seams year after year. Take a look at each component of this bullpen, and you see a very distinct dark side looking back at you. A few bad bounces...

Cubs sign Joey Gathright

According to Bruce Miles, the Cubs have added bench depth in the form of speedy outfielder, Joey Gathright. Gathright can play all outfield positions and is extremely fast.Gathright is a lefthanded bat that could platoon with Reed Johnson in centerfield, or could be a bench player that sees ...

Cubs Sign Joey Gathright, Cars Tremble in Fear

The Cubs made a meaningless signing today. They signed Joey Gathright to a 1-year deal. Hopefully this turns out like another meaningless backup outfielder signing the Cubbies made last year (Reed Johnson). Either way, here's Gathright's video resume (thanks to Bino for pointing this out):

The Chicago Cubs have not found a Swattin' Southpaw yet, but they did sign a Speedin' Southpaw. The Cubs signed former Kansas City and Tampa Bay Outfielder Joey Gathright to a one year contract.Gathright has speed, and he can use it to beat out infield singles and steal many bases. I think the ...
