Mark Pawelek was released today by the organization. The Cubs drafted him in the 1st round in 2005 out of some high school in Utah. Never a good move, in my opinion, to draft somebody from a school where there is little or no talent. Why not select some dude from Anchorage High? Anyway, a week ago the Cubs released 2003 1st round pick Ryan Harvey. I wouldn’t be too surprised to see 2006 1st round pick Tyler Colvin dropped at the end of this season.
In other news, the Cubs trimmed their roster down to 30 yesterday by reassigning or optioning to the minor leagues the following players: Kevin Hart, So Taguchi, Andres Blanco, Esteban German, Mark Johnson and Brad Snyder. It appears the positions players are set with the exception of choosing between Bako and Hill as the back-up catcher.
Soto
Bako/Hill
Lee
Hoffpauir
Fontenot
Miles
Theriot
Ramirez
Soriano
Fukudome
Johnson
Bradley
Gathright
The pitching staff appears set with the exception of one spot in the bullpen.
Zambrano
Harden
Dempster
Lilly
Marshall
Gregg
Marmol
Heilman
Gaudin
Vizcaino
Cotts
One of Guzman, Patton and Samarzija

Another Reason To Love Ryan Dempster: His Stance On Night Games
The debate rages on over night games in Wrigleyville. I personally have an aversion to them for 2 reasons. The first is that I lived in Wrigleyville and its a residential neighborhood. The people who live there have been promised over and over again that traffic and noise issues would be controlled and have been [...]
Hoffpauir, Hill In; Bako, Stanton Out
Micah Hoffpauir is an absolute monster with the bat. He has been raking at every level and every spring for a while now. As usual we all expected the Cubs to send him back to the minors at the end of the spring this year. Thankfully, Lou made the right call putting his power bat [...]
Chicago Cubs hate Erin Andrews
Last week, the Chicago Cubs went into Milwuakee and promptly dispatched of the Brewers, but, that's not the only thing the Cubs were tearing apart. Mike Nadel of the Norwich Bulletin was covering the game for the Cubs, and was lucky enough to ease drop on a few Cub player conversations about ESPN hottie reporter, Erin Andrews (who was also covering the game for ESPN).

Check the Calender Doofus!
We are like, literally, exactly, on the dot sort of, one week away from opening night, Phillies Against the Braves. One day later, the Indians will play.We are in the home stretch of Spring Training and I'm pretty sure the Indians are glad for that.Yesterday and today saw a lot of stuff, so apologies for how much this post might cover, I had stuff to do this morning and I was...
Cardinals Poised for Upset over Cubs for Central Crown?
By Gary Armida
It has been widely assumed that the Chicago Cubs are going to cruise to a repeat division title and make amends for their quick playoff exit in 2008. Many will point to the acquisition of Milton Bradley as the last remaining piece to a Cubs’ run to end their supposed curse. Sure, the [...]
A Full Century of Ineptitude
Mr. Marchman has a good article on the Cubbies and points out that they will be playing for something important this year. They will be attempting to stave off 100 years of futility. In 1908, the Chicago Cubs of Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance and Three-Finger Brown won the World Series; they were, of cours...

Yankees Press Release On The Voice Of God
I mentioned before he will not be at the stadium opener. Here's a press release from the Yankees:The New York Yankees announced today that longtime public address announcer Bob Sheppard will be unavailable at the commencement of the Yankees' 2009 inaugural season, including the club's workout on April 2 as well as the first exhibition games at Yankee Stadium on April 3-4 and Opening...
Around the Halo 3/31/2009
Yesterday in Tempe the Angels battered former Angel Bartolo Colon and the Chicago White Sox 13-3.I must confess I was a bit worried about the Angels offense but they are looking spectacular this spring. They've scored 101 runs in their last 9 games. That's ridiculous. My biggest worry was infield offense and so Erick Aybar, Howie Kendrick and Kendry Morales are bringing it.However...
The Sports Dons 2009 AL West Preview
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim won the American League West by 21 games in 2008, a margin 13 1/2 games wider than the next largest difference which was the Chicago Cubs’ 7 1/2 game lead over National League Wild Card winner Milwaukee. With the departures of some key Angels and the acquisitions of some big name players by the other teams in the West, the race will tighter...
Yanks Press Release On Bob Sheppard
Last Thursday I posted this about a Neil Best article in which he stated that Bob Sheppard would not be attending opening day. Today the Yankees posted this press release on Yankees.com:The New York Yankees announced today that longtime public address announcer Bob Sheppard will be unavailable at the commencement of the Yankees' 2009 inaugural season, including the club's workout...
Cubs Making Roster Decisions
The Cubs made a few announcements in the last two days worth commenting on.
Kevin Gregg has won the closer job. I like this move. Gregg has experience closing and hasn't given up a single run this spring. Carlos Marmol, while a much better pitcher than Gregg, can better serve the team in the 7th and 8th innings, getting out of jams and being the...

Reader Brian K. informs us that John McHale has died at age 86. McHale played 64 games for the Detroit Tigers from 1943 to 1948, plus three more in the 1945 World Series, which Detroit won over the Chicago Cubs.
After his playing career, McHale continued to work in baseball. He became president of th...
