Found March 26, 2008 on My Sports Rumors: Yardbarker Blogger Network
The Chicago Cubs finalized their roster today, with a surprising demotion. First, Ronny Cedeno beat out Alex Cintron for the back-up shortstop job. Second, Mike Fontenot beat out Matt Murton for the final outfield spot. Murton is a surprise to myself as he was in constant trade talk with the Texas Rangers and was just an all out solid player for last years NL Central division winners. Lets look at both of these spring battles and why each made the team.

Off in left Field by: Ryan Vachon

One of the things you get to learn if you follow the minor league prospects closely enough is that, invariably, some prospects seem to fly below the radar, putting up steady numbers without ever garnering the coveted "top prospect" status, while others are super- hyped without ever showing the type of performance that would warrant the attention (anyone remember...

Nolan Ryan Blocked from Signing Barry Bonds

Texas Rangers owner Tom Hicks has repeatedly defended his hiring of Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan as team president, insisting the former superstar pitcher will be much more than a figurehead, as he has been empowered to make all his own baseball decisions -- except one. What if Ryan decides to sign embatt...

Does Ivan Rodriguez Make the Astros Contenders?

When the Astros signed Ivan Rodriguez yesterday, common sense finally prevailed. The Astros needed a starting catcher because the combination of Humberto Quintero, JR Towles, and Lou Palmisano was not going to get it done behind the plate. And Rodriguez needed a place where he could start and prove to all the detractors that he can still be a productive player even in his "advanced...

Jason A. Churchill

Texas Rangers Yeah, they can hit. Michael Young, Hank Blalock, Mark Teixeira and Ian Kinsler are all above-average offensive players for their position and provide the Rangers with plenty of sock. Kerry Wood Closing Opens New Chapter in Pitcher's Career

Wood has the chance to reinvent himself in a way no other athlete has ever done. Most superstar athletes play to their ability and fade out, rediscovering the technical aspects of the game to be capable additions to a team other than the one they helped build. Injuries kept Wood from maximizing his natural talent, and unlike his former teammate Mark Prior, he still has a chance to...

Ho Park vs. Happ

One is a 35 year old righthanded pitcher with 117 wins and 1800+ innings to his credit. The other is a 26 year old lefty with 1 big league victory and 35 innings pitched. Chan Ho Park has done it all during his 15 MLB seasons. He was an all-star in 2000 with the Dodgers, posting a 18-10 record with a 3.27 era. He's also fallen flat on his face with the Texas Rangers from 2002...
