I come to you, hat in hand, eating a healthy slice of humble pie, to say I'm sorry. After spending the last two weeks experiencing life with Aaron Heilman and his band of not so merry men as the closer(s) for my favorite baseball team, I now realize I've been too harsh on you. In the past I've cursed you while following games on television, the radio and the internet. I've called you overrated. I've said to anyone who will listen that you do more talking than pitching and that you can't close out good teams. At one point I thought moving Duaner Sanchez into the closer role was a good idea. I'm not proud of myself. But it wasn't personal, I swear. I don't hate you. I'm just a Mets fan desperate for another World Series crown. I'm not sure if you know, but Mets fans have been burned by an inability to hold leads in big games in the past. In 1988 the Mets were heavy favorites in the National League and were on their way to a commanding 3-1 lead against the Los Angeles Dodgers when Mike Scioscia turned the series around with a 9th inning bomb. In 2000, I suffered through an Armando Benetiz meltdown in game 1 of the World Series. And well, you know what happened in game 2 of the National League Championship Series in 2006. So if you can't tell yet, I'm a bit shell-shocked. And bitter. When you blew a few games earlier this year, that shell-shocked bitterness came back. But being subjected to the Heilman, Sanchez, Schoeneweis, Feliciano and Smith quintet while you are away opened my eyes. To say the experience has been nerve racking would be an understatement. There is a reason you have 385 career saves and been named to five All-Star teams. More often than not, you don't hang change-ups while you are ahead in the count, walk light-hitting shortstops, hit batters with men on base or give up homeruns. You replacements, on the other hand do these things with regularity. So please hurry up and get better. I have to admit, you're latest set-back has me a bit worried. Patching together outs at the end of games against the Nationals and Pirates is one thing. Closing out the Braves, Phillies and Marlins is a different story. And while you may not be the best closer in baseball, you're the best we've got. Missing you every 9th inning, Every Mets Fan

Should Mets put Pedro in 'pen?

As the Mets' six-game winning streak came to a halt on Monday, thanks to an all too familiar blowup by the bullpen, Mets fans were reminded just how much they miss Billy Wagner. But with Billy facing yet another setback in his rehab, it remains unknown just how long New York will be without the closer they love to hate. In the meantime, there's a pennant race going on...

Mets make a trade: Ahern for Ayala

Well it's not the player I expected ( Al Reyes) but at least they made a move and acquired a relief arm. It was said at the deadline that Omar was attempting to acquire Luis Ayala but that the price was too high. The Nats have been obsessed with finding a young starting quality 2B, they set Jon Rauch to Arizona for 2B Emilio Bonifacio who is now their starter while hitting .228...

Luis Castillo is expected to make his first start at NYSEG Stadium for the Binghamton Mets tonight. Castillo is 1-for-8 in three starts with the B-Mets and 2-for-28 in 11 rehab games between GCL, St. Lucie and the Binghamton Mets. Let me do the math for you: that's .071.

Oliver Perez was OK, except for giving up five walks..He pitched 6.1 innings and newcomer Luis Ayala bailed him out of further trouble getting the final 2 outs in the seventh. Pirates 7, Mets 5

Looked like another nondescript loss for the Pirates shortly after this one got under way. Zach Duke was getting lit up, the team made 3 errors in the first 4 innings, and the offense was doing nothing against a terrible Pedro Martinez. 5-1 after 6 innings.-----But, if nothing else, this team has give us reason to keep watching.-----The Pirates rallied for 3 in the 7th and 3 more...

Mets 2, Pirates 1

Jason Davis gave up two in the first and that proved to be the difference. The only Pirate run came on Jack Wilson's first homer all season. Mike Pelfrey had little trouble with the Bucco bats and the Met bullpen did not explode like it did last time we saw it.-Meanwhile, It's 12:09 AM and there's no word on Alvarez. Remember, though: we didn't hear about the Bay...
