Tampa adds Matt Garza and clears out some of their outfield logjam.

  • Wow! I love trades this like. Need for need. Potential superstar for potential superstar. Garza has the potential to win a Cy Young. Young has the potential to be the best hitter in baseball. Lose Torii Hunter, replace him with a 22 year old player with no ceiling. And the Rays add Garza to Kazmir and Shields! Awesome trade for both teams.
  • This is a win win for both teams....this one won't slip under the radar.
  • bad trade for Tampa. I don't see Garza having the upside of Young. Should have traded Baldelli.
  • Who is going to give up top talent for Baldelli?
  • great point. baldelli gets hurt too much to give up a top prospect.
  • This deal is not enough for Tampa Bay. It essentially breaks down to Garza for Young. I gave a complete analysis of the proposed trade on my blog Rays Anatomy, so check it out and feel free to leave comments.

  • I agree, thats why I hope the Twins jump all over this one...
  • I think you are selling Juan Rincon short here. He is one of the top ten middle relievers in the league and the price for middle relief is incredibly high right now. He is easily the third best player in the league.
  • Sorry, meant to say trade rather than league.
  • Good thing, I read that and my jaw dropped.
  • This is an excellent trade for both teams. Matt Garza is a great young pitcher and Delmon Young is a great young outfielder. Each team has a need for new talent in those particular areas.
  • I just wrote a post on my blog about this. Great trade!
  • stupid tampa! they are trading away a soon to be all-star for MATT GRAZA! COME ON! no wonder ur team is always last in ur division!
  • I think that was a good deal. Now the rays need to trade Carl Crawford to the cubs for Rich Hill,Matt Murton and Ronny Cedano
  • Rich Hill may be the future of their pitching staff...
  • Let me explain to you why this trade is terrible. Let's use a hypothetical scenario here:
You're the GM of Team 1. I'm the GM of Team 2. We're both thinking about a trade.
Here is what you offer me:
Player A - Starting RHP. Career 8-13 record with a 4.47 ERA. Has a K to BB ratio less than 2:1. Has given up 158 hits and 77 runs in 133 career innings pitched (more than a run every other inning).
Player B - Shortstop. Career .272 hitter. Potential stolen base threat. Doesn't strike out a lot, but lead the league with 26 errors last season. Small RBI potential, having only 92 total over 321 career games. Gameplay is not improving with time (28 years old). Mediocre range and armstrength.
Player C - Minor league prospect. Lots of potential, but nothing proven yet.
In return, you are requesting the following players from me:
Player D - Starting Right Fielder. Career .293 hitter with raw power potential, and hit .306 after June 1 of the 2007 season. Has a tendacy to strike out. Great defensive player, possessing an arm that rivals top players like Vladimir Guerrero. Finished second in AL Rookie of the Year voting behind World Series Champion Dustin Pedroia. Can steal bases as well. RBI totals in the range of 85-100.
Player E - Shortstop. Rare power for a middle infielder. Hit .286 in his first full season. Not the slickest of fielders, but solid, committing 13 errors in 157 games in 2007. Had an average 60 RBI in 2007. Overall solid player.
Player F - Minor league outfielder who has changed hands between our two team's farm systems once before. Is getting a little old for the minor leagues (24) and may be on his last chance.
Factor in the fact that your team is in desperate need of a superstar outfielder, because you just lost pretty much your whole franchise in center field to free agency. So, your desperation factor, coupled with the logic of looking at numbers from all players, leads me to this decision: I'm not even in the room anymore. I left when you said you wanted Player D for ANY of those other three. This was one of the dumbest trades in Rays history, right up there with the Josh Hamilton and Aubrey Huff deals.
It's hard to be a fan of not only the worst, but also the dumbest, team in baseball.
  • Ok SirMac who would you use instead of Rich Hill to comlete the deal.
  • OF's are a dime a dozen. Why not trade a player that is at the height of his value, with all kinds of "potential" for a position you have never completely filled out in the history of your franchise. Delmon is the next Sheffield that will never be happy anywhere. Sure you might get some good production, but is it worth the locker room cancer? I think not. Whether Garza works out or not at least Tampa is making a play to upgrade it's biggest weakness. For that I applaud them and look forward to the playoffs in 2009.
  • I'm a huge Delmon Young fan, so I was a little disappointed that Tampa decided to part ways with him -- as I was rather looking forward to seeing Delmon help to build the Rays into a competitive AL East team in the future. But, I understand the Rays interest in Garza -- as well as the Twins interest in Young. Personally, I see Delmon, who's a few years younger than Garza, with more upside; but there won't be a clear "winner" in this trade for a couple more years, until we really see what kind of home runs and stolen bases Delmon is going to put up as he get's more settled into the big leagues.

And, Ronald, there was no deal for Josh Hamilton -- unless you're referring to the idea that he wasn't protected in the Rule 5 draft -- where the Cubs selected him and traded him to the Reds.

As much as I wanted to see Delmon remain in Tampa, the trade addressed team needs for both organizations, and I think both teams will be happy with the results -- although I think the Twins got a little better end of the deal with a guy who's only 22, and who's going to be a superstar.

Delmon Young/Matt Garza Trade Discussion

Could this finally be "The Year of the Ray"? In this post from FIO's Free For All writers' blog, staff writer Tim Hays discusses how the addition of another young arm to a rotation could help put Tampa Bay into the mix in the AL East this coming season. Sure, they lost a five-star stud, but the Devil Rays woes have always centered around pitching - now if only they could get that...

Was Delmon Young Traded For Being (Too) Black?

In the wake of the blockbuster Twins trade, one Tampa paper proclaimed there was a 50% chance of Delmon Young turning into Elijah Dukes, while a Tampa TV station's blog said the chance was 100%. Somebody had to take issue with that and invoke the images of Gary Sheffield, Al Davis and Jackie Robinson. All to keep the dream of a more perfect Devil Rays alive.

Rundown Of Santana Deals

Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune takes a closer look at what the Twins could get for Johan Santana from the Mets, Yankees, Dodgers, Angels and Red Sox. Christensen lists a dream trade for the Twins, the reality of why it can't happen, and then a more realistic offer.

TWINS/RAYS MAKE HUGE TRADE

It's not the Johan Santana trade that everyone was hoping for (more on that later), but the Minnesota Twins and the Tampa Bay Rays made a trade yesterday

Hot Foot Interview With Aaron Gleeman

I recently interviewed Aaron Gleeman. Gleeman is the co-founder and operator of The Hardball Times. His blog AaronGleeman.com gets three million hits and he is also a contributing baseball writer for Rotoworld and NBC Sports. In 2006, Gleeman was featured in a short profile in Sports Illustrated. Gleeman is a Twins fan, so I asked for his take on the Johan Santana trade rumors.

Worst. Trade. Ever.

Absolutely ridiculous proposed trade from Twins beat writer -- basically asking the Red Sox to give all of their stars under the age of 25 for Santana, Nathan and a player who's actually a free agent. Where do these people come from?

Troy Percival...Seriously?

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are close to signing the former Angels closer to a multi-year deal and rumor has it that he could take over 9th inning duties for his new squad. I know he pitched last year and pitched well, but for the last half decade or so he's been the guy that gets called out at auction fantasy drafts only to have someone say "isn't he hurt?" and then...

Yo! Hand over Santana

By Chuck Richter - Senior Editor Angelswin.com When the Twins offered Santana a four-year extension - beginning in 2009 - for a total of $80 million, which he rejected, it was an obvious rejection because Santana certainly will clear more than that on either the free-agent front or via another team that acquires him in a trade. Santana, who will turn 29 in March...

Mets acquire Brian Stokes from the Rays

The New York Mets announced today that they have acquired right-handed relief pitcher Brian Stokes from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations. Stokes will be added to New York's 40-man roster, which now stands at 36. Stokes, 28, went 2-7 with a 7.07 ERA in 59 games for Tampa Bay last year. In 62.1 innings, the 6-1, 210-pounder allowed 90 hits, 49 runs...
