TEAMS: St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers
Chris Carpenter wasn't his average badass self on Wednesday. Neither was perennial All-Star Albert Pujols, who went 0-for-3.Carpenter got off to a slow start in his St. Louis Cardinals' 5-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, giving up runs in three of his five innings. He issued four walks and needed 105 pitches to get just 15 outs. Yikes.
Matt Kemp homered for LA, Rafael Furcal enjoyed a three-hit evening with a run scored and one driven in, and the bullpen overcame Randy Wolf's short start.
Both teams stranded 30 runners combined, which is a division series record. They also took a grueling 3 hours and 54 minutes to complete play. Also a ridiculous record.
Check out Game 2 of this NLDS over at Walkoff Walk, where I'll be doing my best to live-blog the action. Should be good times.
Update: UNBELIEVABLE GAME TWO FINISH. Almost got shrimped. Read about it here.

The Cards' Chris Carpenter and the Jays' Aaron Hill are MLB Comeback Players of the Year...
Major League Baseball gave out some hardware today, and the 'Comeback Players' of the Year were named. A special congratulations to the Cardinals' Chris Carpenter -- who pretty much missed two years and just flat out dominated on the mound in the National League -- and the Jays' Aaron Hill, who seemingly came out of nowhere to rake at the plate in 2009.>>> Read More

C-a-C: 'I'm sorry, did Buzz Bissinger write a book about you?'
Well, I have to say I didn't see that coming. In a park perfectly suited to his superhero strengths, St. Louis' Chris Carpenter(notes) was merely mortal in Wednesday's 5-3 loss, giving up four runs and nine hits in just five innings of work against the Dodgers in Game 1. Now down 1-0, Tony La Russa, Albert Pujols(notes) and the Cardinals will have turn to the other half of their...

Dodgers Take First Game Versus Cardinals
The Los Angeles Dodgers limped to the end of the 2009 baseball regular season. However, in their first game of the postseason, the Dodgers looked like the team that dominated the National League for much of the season.
After Ryan Ludwick hit a single to put the St. Louis Cardinals up 1-0, the Dodgers got a two-run blast from Matt Kemp — and never trailed again. Los Angeles...
With strong bullpen, Dodgers don't need quality starts to win
After watching Randy Wolf work in and out of trouble for 3 2/3 innings, Joe Torre decides to put Game 1 on his relievers' shoulders. The NL's best bullpen comes through again, and we should see this game plan repeated, Scott Miller says.
