That was a close game, but it could've been over long before Yunel Escobar's sprawling play to get Matt Kemp.

For instance, why does Joe Torre have to hit-and-run on every full count? Like today, he sent Orlando Hudson and Tony Abreu in the bottom of the fifth with nobody out and Brad Ausmus at the plate. Like clockwork, Ausmus strikes out and Hudson is dead to rights at third. It's seriously terrible, and I hate how the excuse for dumb moves like this is "being aggressive". Over the years, i've learned that "being aggressive" is code for "giving away free outs" or "doing the most illogical **** I can think of".

Just like in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and 1 out. Why pinch hit with Mark Loretta, the worst field player on the team? What was wrong with Juan Pierre, Russell Martin, or Casey Blake? Even Juan Castro would have been better. Ugh.

On the positive side of things, Ronald Belisario looked healthy. Contrary to some reports, his velocity seemed fine.

Anybody else out there getting a bad feeling that George Sherrill will be dead because of Torre's usage by the time the playoffs roll around?

Oh, and by the way, how was that for an "ace" performance by Clayton Kershaw? Cliff Lee, eat your heart out.

Free Agent at the End of the Season: Orlando Hudson

When the 2008 offseason began, I, like many others, assumed that Orlando Hudson was in line for a huge contract. Hudson was considered to be the best free agent second baseman on the market and there seemed to be no reason why Hudson was no going to get paid. However, the market for Orlando Hudson never developed. The long term deal that Hudson was seeking became a pipe dream and...

Kemp leads Dodgers past Giants 4-2

Matt Kemp hit a three-run double to back a strong effort from Hiroki Kuroda and help the slumping Los Angeles Dodgers win the opener of their key three-game series against the San Francisco Giants, 4-2 Monday night.

Recap: San Francisco vs. Los Angeles

Matt Kemp slapped a bases-clearing double in the fourth inning and Hiroki Kuroda pitched into the seventh as the Los Angeles Dodgers topped the Giants, 4-2, in the opener of a three-game series between the NL West rivals.

Another Brutal Loss In Extras: Braves 2, Dodgers 1

It's not like the Dodgers didn't have their chances in this one; despite letting Japanese import Kenshin Kawakami take a perfect game through the first three innings, the Dodgers erased themselves (Orlando Hudson in the fifth on a strike-'em-out, throw-'em-out double play) or stranded baserunners in scoring position, leaving men at second in the fourth, fifth, seventh...

The Pen And A Roster Move

I wasn't here long enough after the game to write something up, and now that i'm home, I feel way too lazy to actually do it, so i'll let Jon Weisman do it for me. :oThis was a strange game. From the odd fifth-inning reprieve from home-plate umpire Eric Cooper that set up Casey Blake's three-run homer, to Chad Billingsley cruising again against Atlanta and then straining...
