I have to say, intentional or not, I'm with Derek Lee on this one. Anytime you nearly get blasted in the face with a pitch, I think it's fair game to charge the mound. That being said, what a sorry attempt at a punch from both Lee and Young. They both whiffed pretty bad; maybe they'd be better off going for the Ric Flair chop on each other.

As noted here and everywhere else yesterday, Lou Piniella has decided to give Carlos Zambrano the Opening Day assignment at Houston. It will be the fifth time Zambrano has had the honor; the Cubs have gone 2-2 in Z's previous Opening Day outings.

Well it's been a week later since the draft precluded. The Cubs have already been successful in signing several midround players and will be very active in the coming week. As the Boise Hawks (Short Season A) prepare to start their season, and have quite a few holes to fill. Talks with first rounder Josh Vitters are progressing slowly but surely. Carlos Zambrano has been the most dominant pitcher for the Cubs over the last 6 years or so. He has consistently won double digit games, struck out a ton of hitters, and had a sub-3.50 ERA. Sammy Sosa's towering grant slam yesterday versus the Reds marked his 599th career home run, just one away from the 600 home run milestone. And while it would be nice for him to hit 600 against the Reds this weekend, it would be even better to hit it against the Cubs, Sosa's former team and the team that they meet next starting on Monday.

Thanks to Suburban Kid for the heads up that the Cubs had decided that Carlos Zambrano would be their Opening Day starter. Carrie Muskat chimes in here (thanks for the link, Vlad). My favorite thing about that is the first comment:

In one of the most hilarious turns of events in MLB history, we now have the reason behind Joel Zumaya's ALCS injury. It's done the impossible, it's even more ridiculous than Carlos Zambrano's email injuries from a couple of years ago. Zumaya was injured not from pitching, but from excessive play of Guitar Hero, one of the best games ever made.
