I'm happy for my colleague, Ryan Divish, who has a 7:30 p.m. flight to Seattle and has been sweating out the weather. I'm not flying until tomorrow morning, so I'm cool, calm and collected.
Lots of scouts at the game today to watch both the Mariners and Tigers. A Phillies' scout is here, presumably to evaluate Jarrod Washburn.
The Mariners are 9-3 in rubber games to decide who wins a three-game series. One thing to watch: Ichiro didn't get a hit yesterday. He hasn't gone hitless in two consecutive games yet this season. In fact, he hasn't done so since Aug. 13-15 last year (there was an off day on Aug. 14); it's been 127 games since he had two hitless in a row. Impressive.
Bonus Felix note from Jeff Evans of the Mariners:
Felix Hernandez recorded his 50th win last night. According to research by Stats, Inc, he is the 15th-fastest in terms of age to reach 50 career wins:
Youngest to 50 Wins, since 1919

Game 95, Mariners at Tigers
Washburn vs French, Rain Delay, Start Time Unknown
Washburn gets a bit of a test today, agianst a line-up with some bats that can thump lefties and Franklin Gutierrez sitting on the bench. Comerica’s dimensions will help him, but Langerhans/Balentien are no Gutierrez/Chavez, so Wash is actually going to have to pitch well today. [...]--

Freddy Dolsi optioned out
Freddy Dolsi was optioned to Toledo folowing the game to make room for Eddie Bonine. My money is on Zach Simons to get recalled following the game if Bonine is optioned back out.
BC’s Maxim Hometown Hotties Endorsements: Pilar Lima Likes Detroit Tigers, Was Exchange Student, Not Related To Adrianna
Since the Busted Coverage intern was being a little bitch today and wanted a day off we called up photo editor Big Gay Rich for some freelancing work.
“Find us a hot chick. Preferrably with giant implants and a decent story,” was the editorial directive.
As always, leave it to the gay guy to get the job [...]
Saving the Bullpen
Justin Verlander pitches a complete game as the Tigers defeat the White Sox 5-1. Verlander gave up three singles to load the bases in the top of the ninth, but he didn’t come out. Instead, he induced a 1-2-3 double play, then got Thursday’s hero, Dewayne Wise to ground out to end the [...]
Tigers' Verlander shuts down ChiSox on 6 hits
Justin Verlander allowed one unearned run in a six-hitter as the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 5-1 in the first game of Friday's day-night doubleheader.
Closing Time: In which Ozzie Guillen delivers a vote of confidence
All the trades are spun, and the early news items were covered in Pre-Closing Time. Let's all enjoy a few refreshing evening bullets before the 1:00 am Ice Road Truckers...• Bobby Jenks has been battered in his last five appearances, allowing 10 hits and seven runs in 5.1 innings. However, Ozzie Guillen would like you to know that Jenks' role remains secure and you are...
Cleveland Indians at Seattle Mariners: 07/24 game thread
It's 70 degrees at first pitch as Ryan Rowland-Smith makes his home debut and his first appearance since April. The Mariners are playing their first home game since the All-Star Break and really can't afford to let up at all.
Why Not Josh Willingham for the Mariners?
I was commenting on someone's article the other day and came across a very reasonable proposal. The proposal would bring Josh Willingham to the Seattle Mariners in a trade before the deadline.
What would it take for Willingham to become a Seattle Mariner? A source says that Washington is very interested in receiving pitching in return for Willingham, seeing as how they lack...
2009 AL Breakout Hitters
Russell Branyan—Seattle Mariners
Made his major league debut in 1998 with the Indians but has never batted 400 times in a season. He came the closest to 400 at bats in 2002 when he batted 378 times for the Indians and Reds.
He hit 24 homers that season and has hit 24 homers this season in only 310 at bats. His .274 batting average this season is the highest of any season in...
Cabrera, Ordonez Lead Tigers to Win
It certainly had the feeling of one of those games. Too many times to count over the past several seasons the Detroit Tigers had raced out to six or seven run leads in the first couple of innings, only to sit idly by while the opponent began to chip away and eventually overtake the Tigers and win the game.
Last night had all the makings of a similar ending.
The recipe for disaster...
