The Giants new additions to the roster were key to their victory. Youngsters Todd Linden and Jack Taschner contributed late in the game.
Former Blue Jays RP Vinnie Chulk inherited runners on first and second when he replaced Mike Stanton in the 8th inning with no outs. Mike Cameron attempted to bunt the runners over, but Chulk was able to throw out Ben Johnson at third. Jack Taschner came into the game with men still on first and second and one out in the 1-0 game. Going down into the corner, Linden made a game-saving catch on a slicing line drive by Padres RF Brian Giles. Linden came in as a defensive substitution for Barry Bonds (0-4) in the 8th inning. Taschner recorded the last out by striking out catcher Rob Bowen on 3 pitches.
Armando Benitez notched his 14th save of the year with a rocky but scoreless 9th inning. The Padres had runners on first and second with less than 2 outs in the last 3 consecutive innings.
