From Erik Boland:
“We’ve talked about importance of winning Game 3 [against the Twins] so we could set up our rotation the way we want to,” Girardi said. “Not getting him [Sabathia] to 250 innings in the regular season allows us to consider that [pitching him three games].”He said the topic has been broached with Sabathia, but not in depth.“We’ve talked a little bit about what we might do,” Girardi said. “But we’ve told him to concentrate on Game 1, that’s the most important game, and we’ll go from there."
Good, this is how they should set things up. The fact that he's publicly stating that he's considering it is basically like saying, "yea, we're going with a three-man rotation." With a three-man staff, not only do you avoid having to start a pitcher like Chad Gaudin, but now if a pitcher does get bombed the Yanks have two long men in the pen so they can use either Gaudin or Alfred...

Will The Weather Hurt The Yankees?
As of right now, which is 8:09 eastern time, there is a 90% chance of rain on Friday, the day of Game 1. It has already been said that Game 1 will be played Saturday, and Game 2 Sunday, then Game 3 in LA on Monday, if there is a rainout. This would put the schedule at:Saturday the 17th: Sabathia vs LackeySunday the 18th: Burnett vs SaundersMonday the 19th: Pettitte vs WeaverTuesday...
Who's Got the Secret Sauce?
A while back the geniuses at Baseball Prospectus figured out that the three keys to postseason success are having three or four strikeout starters, a strong back end of the bullpen, and a good defense (buy their book Baseball Between the Numbers if you haven't!). Even if you're not a stat guy, just about any baseball insider will agree that, "Pitching and Defense Wins...
Listen: Championship Series Preview, Yanks, Mets Hot Stove
Howard Megdal joined me tonight to chat about the playoffs, Yanks/Angels, and even a little Mets hot stove talk.
We discussed why so many closers are having trouble this postseason, reviewed a Philadelphia/Los Angeles matchup, and analyzed the Yanks/Angels. Hear us talk about CC Sabathia on 3 days rest, Chad Gaudin getting a Game 4 start, [...]
Gaudin ready for any role
The hell of a 3-0 deficit likely would not get Chad Gaudin the Game 4 start. But if Games 1 or 2 are rained out? Then maybe.
Manager Joe Girardi wants to use CC Sabathia three times in the ALCS because he can, because of the day off between Games ...
Weather or not, Joba & Gaudin ready
With the forecast calling for an 80% chance of rain for Friday both Chad Gaudin and Chamberlain have been told that they might have to step in and start Game 4 on Tuesday if a postponement pushes back Sabathia's start in the opener.
Count Me As In Favor of the 3 Man Yankee Rotation
The Yankees are apparently leaning towards going with a 3 man rotation for the ALCS. Thanks to the fact that the ALCS has 3 separate off days the Yankees would be able to pitch CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett, and Andy Pettitte on full rest in every game but game 4 when CC Sabathia would go on 3 days rest. Here are 3 reasons why I agree with the move.1. The Limited Numbers Back It UpThe...
Yanks may go with 3-man rotation vs. Angels
The Yankees may go with a three-man rotation against the Los Angeles Angels in the AL championship series.
Manager Joe Girardi says the shortened rotation would allow him to keep Joba Chamberlain and Chad Gaudin in the bullpen.
Such a plan would have CC Sabathia starting Game 4 on three days' rest. Sabathia is used to short rest from his time with the Milwaukee Brewers...
Yanks 3 Man Rotation is out of Fear?
This from Bob Klapisch of Fox Sports:" The upcoming ALCS figures to be an old-fashioned war between two teams that clearly respect each other. But the Yankees are already bracing for this sobering reality: unlike the Twins, the Angels don't fear them."To be honest, I think they look down on us," said general manager Brian Cashman. "They've had their way...
AP: Yankees may go with 3-man rotation against Angels
NEW YORK — The Yankees may go with a three-man rotation against the Los Angeles Angels in the AL championship series.
CC Sabathia is scheduled to start Friday night’s opener, with A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte and New York’s other two primary starters. The shortened rotation would allow manager Joe Girardi to keep Joba Chamberlain and Chad Gaudin in the bullpen...
Constructing the ALCS Roster
The cool thing about the postseason is that teams that advance to the next round can adjust their roster, for whatever reason--maybe someone gets hurt, maybe someone is better against one team than another. With the ALDS over, the Yankees can now construct their ALCS roster. This roster will largely remain the same--the differences come down to basically whether or not, against the...
Guzman On Roster In Place Of Hinske
This from Chad Jennings over at the Lohud:Joe Girardi just announced that Freddy Guzman has been added to the roster in place of Eric Hinske. A.J. Burnett is starting Game 2. Andy Pettitte in Game 3. Game 4 is TBA.He also has this:Chad Gaudin threw 50 pitches on Tuesday and said he’s been told to be ready to pitch on Friday. Not as a starter, but as a guy who could give the Yankees...
2009 ALCS: Series Preview
After an almost excruciatingly long lay-off, the ALCS will finally begin tomorrow night at Yankee Stadium, weather permitting. The coming rain storm will likely lengthen what was already being thought of as a long series. The schedule-makers will have their hands full trying to reschedule games for this ALCS.Looking past Mother Nature, the series breaks down like this:Offense. The...
