It was always our dream. We all wished it would happen. We wanted Omar Vizquel to retire as a Cleveland Indian. It only seemed natural. It only seemed right. The fans wanted it to happen. Omar wanted it to happen. The Indians front office wanted it to happen. Then the Giants stepped in and offered Omar a 3 year, $12.5 million contract, and at that point we all knew it was over. There was no way Omar could turn down that deal, and there was no way the Indians were going to match that deal, especially with blazing hot SS prospect Jhonny Peralta looking more and more ready for big league play. The Omar Vizquel era was officially over.

More hope for the future:
Mike Loree must be wondering what a guy needs to do to get a win.
The 21-year-old right-hander struck out seven over seven perfect innings for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes on Friday, but the Yakima Bears rallied with two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the ninth for a 2-1 victory.
Over 21 innings in his last four starts, Loree has retired a remarkable...
Good Showing Grady
I have to admit, I wasn't sure how Grady was going to do in the Home Run contest. He isn't really the kind of guy you think of when you ponder this event. Grady surprised me, not just because of how many home runs he hit, but how far he was able to drive the ball. Grady hit 6 homers, and about 4 more that would have been out if they managed to stay fair. His longest traveled...

Even Barry Bonds is unemployed
If we needed any more proof that we are in economic struggles then we need to look no further then the unemployment of Barry Bonds.
Barry Bonds, a big slugger who can draw tons of walks.
You would think Barry Bonds had been found guilty of something by the way big league clubs have stayed away from him this year.
Truth is we don't really know any more then we knew last...

Is this a Home Run Derby or a Soap Box Derby?
ESPN reports that Justin Morneau is the last player to join tomorrow's Home Run Derby festivities, assuring that this year's field will be the most uninspiring and milquetoast in the event's history.

Tribe Sweeps Rays Into Second
Cleveland's hitters are absolutely on fire, just in time for an extended break. Who's the hottest? That's a tough call between Ben Francisco and Jhonny Peralta. Francisco's stat line for the series- 9 for 15 (.600!) with 3 doubles, a homer, 6 RBI, and 3 walks. Peralta's line- 7 for 15 (.467) with 2 doubles, 2 homers and 7 RBI. America i think is rooting him on after all he has done and went through.
Hi I'm Rick Reilly!!!
Hi I'm Rick Reilly.I work for ESPN now and they put me on television instead of just leaving me in print. You might notice me from my appearance helping Berman and Joe Morgan announce the home run derby. Yes, I was attempting to make a lot of jokes and be Mr. Funny Guy. Yes, I acted like a complete ass and my joke about Mark McGwire was more played out than Omar Vizquel. ...

Michael Lewis on Shane Battier and "sabermetric" analysis in basketball. An interesting article over at Basketball Prospectus on using Pomeroy's numbers in the tournament. The second to last table, about 3/4 of the way down, is the most relevant one; no surprises there, but it's always nice to confirm that KPom's stats do, in fact, work.More CHONE: NL East,...
