If the Mets decide to go with a traditional longman they could be encouraged by Livan Hernandez's ability to come out of the pen and pitch two scoreless innings. Of Course, that success could be making him a favorite for the fifth starters spot. To make Hernandez the longman could cause more problem then it helps, the team would have to decide between Freddy Garcia and Jon Niese. Neither pitcher has been very effective, Garcia may ask to be released if re-assigned to the minor leagues and many feel Niese is being rushed if he's anywhere but in AAA.The Mets could decide to not use a longman and carry two right handed relievers for early in games. Hernandez would be the fifth starter with Niese in AAA and Garcia either in the minors or elsewhere. They would have room for Villone, Parnell ( or O'Day) and Stokes. If needed Stokes has been known to go more then one inning. Another candidate for the longman role is Tony Armas Jr, who according to Adam Rubin has been re-assigne...

The Rotation & Pedro....

It's still very early in camp but you'd have to be the ultimate optimist not to be worried about the Starting rotation. What was perceived to be a strength of the team, has suddenly looked very shaky outside of Johan Santana.Mike Pelfrey looked good in his return to the mound but even after the outing he mentioned still feeling the discomfort in the back of his leg. Just...

Things Going Right

Tim Redding won't be ready to open the season with the Mets. John Maine isn't throwing his curveball yet. Freddie Garcia looks like what he is -- a thirty-something pitcher trying to come back from shoulder surgery. Livan Hernandez can't break a pane of glass at ten paces with his fastball. While spring training 2009 has been a relatively happy camp, there is no shortage...

I Hate Our Bullpen, Help Me

I usually try and take an optimistic approach when it comes to things surrounding this team and life in general, look at my feelings towards last year's opening day bullpen for example; I actually thought Brian Stokes would make a league average reliever. Lately I've tried to curb my enthusiasm and l...

Big step for Livan...

Livan Hernandez moved himself one step closer to making this team, with Tim Redding being side lined indefinitely both the fifth starters spot and long man positions are available. However, nobody has established themselves as a front runner for either position. Hernandez has been in the lead but that's been more by default then anything else, that may have changed today. Hernandez...

Phillies, Others, In On Hernandez

The Phillies have pulled out of the running for Kyle Lohse since he wanted a forty million dollar deal, and now the Phillies are eying Livan Hernandez. I think Hernandez will be looking for a deal similar to Silva, if not better, so they may have to look elsewhere. Hernandez was 11-11 with a 4.93 ERA...

Mets Request Financial Information On Pedro?

I know that on Friday I reported that a Mets source had told the NY Post that there was zero chance the Mets would get Pedro Martinez, but now Steve Popper of the Record is reporting something that would dispel that earlier report. Don't rule out Pedro Martinez just yet. While some Mets' officials continue to claim that the marriage has ended, one person familiar with the...

White Sox Might Bring Back Familiar Face

The White Sox are hosting their annual Winter Warm up, aka "Sox Fest," and might be looking to make a move to fight off their aggressive fans. According to the Arlington Heights Daily Herald, the White Sox are looking into signing pitchers Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia. Both pitchers are coming off...

Mets Shut Down Redding

The Mets have decided to shut down starter Tim Redding due to a lack of shoulder strength, the Newark Star-Ledger is reporting. Mets GM Omar Minaya reiterated that Redding is not injured, but that he needs to build up his arm strength. "He feels good in the bullpen, but he lacks strength in the shoulder area," Minaya said. "We will let him rest for a while, make sure...

Mixed reviews on Garcia

Strictly looking at the box score, I would have thought that Freddy Garcia's outing today was an improvement. It's only his third appearance, in which he's coming off major surgery and is only expected to be a fifth starter. He was on a strict pitch count of 45 which is why he didn't finish his third inning of work, but 2.1 innings he allowed two runs on two hits...

Redding will start the season on DL

According to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, the Mets will start Tim Redding's season on the DL because of shoulder fatigue... The Mets have three other candidates to fill the last and 5th spot in the rotation in the likes of  Freddie Garcia, Jon Niese, Livan Hernandez. Livan Hernandez looks like the front runner followed by Jon Niese, trailing is Garcia.. If you...

Redding Shelved

Tim Redding has been so bad that he was going to force the Mets to do something, with a guaranteed contract Redding was assured a spot but how could the Mets carry a guy who is giving up 4-5 runs an inning. Not that I would wish bad luck on anyone, but I had hoped they could use the DL to at least hide Redding while they tried to figure out what was wrong and get it right. This morning...

Time To Say Goodbye To Freddy Garcia

When the Mets first signed Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract, he boastfully proclaimed that the number five starters job was his. In his mind it was never a competition and in fact when asked to comment on it he said, "Either they give me the job or I'll go pitch for someone else." Garcia started for the Mets today against the Tigers, and according to Bart Hubbuch...

Livan Hernandez Steps Up

Although Livan Hernandez may have been the last pitcher to join the competition for the fifth starters job, he might have moved one step closer to claiming the job after tossing two no-hit innings against the Nationals on Saturday. Livan got a leg up on the job after the Mets announced that Tim Redding would start the season on the disabled list with a sore shoulder. Freddy Garcia...

I Vote For Pedro!

Once last season ended and throughout the off-season I thought that Pedro Martinez would be just a memory of days gone by. I didn't hold a grudge against Pedro but he was hurt more often than not and did not earn the big contract he was given. Pedro was brought here to bring the Mets a championship but never delivered one. In 2006, the one year that the Mets did make the playoffs...

Veterans over Evans...

I thought it was interesting that Adam Rubin the other day completed a post on his early 25 man roster predictions, Adam thought the Mets may carry Nick Evans for the first week and then call-up Livan Hernandez as the fifth starter when needed. They could actually carry a sixth bench player even longer if they allowed the longman to make two starts in April. But the Mets went through...
